163
SPECIAL MEETING SEPTEMBER 4, 1935
Special meeting of the Board of Public Works was held on Wednesday, September 4,
1935 at 9:45 A. M.
This meeting was called for the purpose of receiving representative's of the
Polish -American Central Civic Committee in connection with resurfacing and widening of
Western Avenue. These representatives stated that they had called a meeting of their
Committee and the representatives of the Western Avenue Improvement Association, as
requested by the Board on the previous day, to present a united request.
The Committee submitted a written statement from fourteen members of the Western'
• Avenue Improvement Association repudiating the claims that llr. Anthony Bueholtz, their
President, who had previously acted without the authority of the membership, concurred
in the request of the Polish'American Central Civic Committee to have Western 'Avenue
re -paved or re-surfaced.a.t once while the construction at Western Avenue and Walnut
Street wars in progress and. Western Avenue was now closed to traffic.
The Board agreed to take the matter up with the State Highway Commission to_,
request a hearing and the following letter was addressed to the Commission:
"The Board of Public Works of the City of South Bend has directed me to file with
you an application on the part of the city for the paving or resurfacing of Western
Avenue from N(ichigan Street, U.S. #31, to Olive Street, which is part of the route of
Federal Highway #112 and State #2, with a view to making it safer and better for the
vast amount of traffic which passes over it. The Board believes that the details of
this improvement could be best worked out in a conference with the State Highway,
Commission, and therefore is not submitting the details at this time. The Board will
very much appreciate your setting a time and date convenient for all parties concerned,
at the State Highway Commission Office, preferably on a Thursday, when this conference
can be held."
The meeting adjourned at 10:00 o'clock.
boara or Yubilc worxs
ATTEST: Clerk
r
C
0
0
