MEETING SEPTEMBER 3, 1935 <br />Regular meeting of the Board of Public Works was held on Tuesday, September 3, <br />1935 at 11:15 A. M. Mr. Hunter was absent. <br />Minutes of meeting of August 26th were read and approved. <br />Claims in the amount of $45.88, from the following suppliers, were approved and <br />ordered paid <br />Lumber Mutual Agency $37.13. <br />South Bend Clean Towel Service 8.75 <br />ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT - Mr. Qualls present: <br />Mr. Qualls submitted a sketch showing recommended replacement and re -location of <br />the electric light poles on West North Shore Drive between Leeper Avenue and Niles <br />Avenue. Upon his recommendation, the Board instructed him to take the matter up with <br />the Indiana & Michigan Electric Company to carry out the suggested program. <br />Several -members of the Polish -American Central Civic Committee were present and <br />submitted a request which was the result of meeting of that Committee requesting <br />that the Board of Works take such steps as will be necessary to bring about the <br />and re -surfacing of Western Avenue at once. At the same meeting was present <br />Anthony Bucholtz, President of the Western Avenue Improvement Association, who stated <br />that in his opinion the majority of those affected in the district were in favor of <br />having Western Avenue widened from Michigan Street to Olive Street. Due to the <br />apparent variance in the desires of these two.Associations, the Board instructed them <br />to iron out their differences and meet with the Board the following day - on Wednesday-, <br />September 4th. <br />Mr. O. J. Goffeney, architect representing the Standard Oil Company, presented <br />plans for re -construction of several Filling Stations now operating in South Bend, and, <br />upon analysis of the plans, the Board instructed them to revise same, so that the <br />openings in the approaches would be not wider tY&n thirty feet. <br />CEMETERY DEPARTMENT -'Mr. Longenecker present: <br />Mr. Longenecker reported progress made at the Cemetery and stated that he had <br />received additional help from the Federal Authorities to carry on the work. <br />Mr. Longenecker submitted his report for the month of August, showing receipts of <br />$348.50, which showed four burials and perpetual care on one lot. <br />Insurance policy in the Indiana Lumberman's Mutual Insurance Company of Indian- <br />apolis for 2,500.00, covering Street Department office, fixtures and merchandise for <br />a period of three years from September 3, 1935, was approved by the Board. <br />Twenty-year Guaranty Bond in the United States Fidelity and Guaranty Company of <br />Baltimore, covering new roof recently placed on the Police and Fire Alarm Station by <br />John Beyrer & Sons Company, was approved by the Board. <br />The meeting adjourned at 12:10 P.
