DeHaven 293.18 <br />Several representatives of the Northern Indiana Wholesale Grocery Company appeared <br />before the Board claiming damages to their property, on account of grade separation at <br />Walnut Street and New York Central tracks, and stated that previous Boards had made <br />certain promises to them to cover this damage. The matter was referred to Mr. Anderson <br />to check up and to the City Attorney to look up the legal angle of the matter and to <br />report at the next meeting. <br />Mr. A. J. Korpel presented to the Board a letter from Chester L. Jankowski, <br />Engineer, advising the remodeling of his store building to conform with the new street <br />grade that would cost approximately $8,500.00. Mr. Korpel placed this claim before the <br />Board for consideration. No action was taken. <br />Mr. Frank Chidister appeared before the Board and reported that the alley running <br />• north from Lindsey Street, between Cottage Grove and Cushing Street, had been filled in <br />from time to time and that now it is considerably above the normal grade and permits <br />water to run on to his property. He requested re -grading of the alley. The matter was <br />referred to the Street Department. <br />Matter of appropriations for various accounts was discussed and it was decided that <br />Mr. Weer, Mr. Woodward and Mr. Anderson go over the appropriations and expenditures and <br />make such recommendations as they find it necessary. <br />The Central Fruit Company, East Washington Street, submitted a drawing showing a <br />dock which they desire to build for unloading to their warehouse. The matter was <br />referred to the Engineering Department, who have investigated and recommend that the <br />. petition be not granted. It was regularly moved, seconded and carried that recommend- <br />ations of the Engineer be sustained. The Secretary has written the Central Fruit Co. <br />accordingly. <br />A letter from M. B. Skinner Company, calling attention to the neglected condition <br />of the parkway on Falcon Street, the recognized approach to West Sample Street <br />Factories, requesting that the trees in the parkway be trimmed, was referred to the <br />Street Department. <br />Mr. Victor Korhummel, representing the Socony Vacuum Oil Company, petitioned the <br />Board for a part of the fuel and oil business of the Street Department. It was decided <br />to take this matter up for consideration at a future time. <br />• The matter of charges of the Water Works Department against the Building and <br />Engineering Departments for gasoline consumption was brought to the attention of the <br />Board by the Secretary, stating that the Water Works has been charging 19.20 per gallon, <br />whereas the cost of the same gasoline from the Gafill Oil Company, direct, would be <br />14.80. This was referred to Mr. Woodward to take up with the Water Works Board. <br />The matter of removing a watering trough, now located at Cushing Street and Portage <br />Avenue, was again brought up and it was moved, seconded and carried that the Water Works <br />,Department be instructed to remove it. <br />A letter from the South Bend Finance Association was read to the Board, advising <br />that Mr. Harry Lewis is not ,representing the South Bend Finance Association in any way, <br />• and also stating that the South Bend Finance Association is not interested in any way <br />in the selection of the equipment for the Fire Department, other than the standpoint of <br />efficiency. <br />
