<br />South Bend Common Council <br />NEWS RELEASE February 16, 2010, 1:00 p.. <br />South Bend Common Council Appointments to Boards, Commissions ~ <br />Committees <br />Contact: Derek D. Dieter, President of the South Bend Corraman Couneil, announced that <br />several citizen appointments have been made by the Council. <br />Marcia Jones, who has a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics from the College of Mt. St. Joseph, and has <br />participated on several organizations such as the Family & Children's Center, South Bend Heritage, the <br />Community Foundation, and the Public Education Foundation, was re-appointed as a Couneil representative to the <br />South Bend Redevelopment Commission. Ms. Jones' term is for the 2010 calendar year. <br />Dr. I3avid A. Varner, who has a Bachelor's degree in Biology from Indiana University and holds a Doctor of <br />Dentistry degree from Indiana University, has been re-appointed to serve as a Council representative to the South <br />Bend Redevelopment Commission. Dr. Varner chairs the Council's Information and Technology Canztnittee and <br />the Council's Public Works and Property Vacation Committee. Additionally, Dr. Varner served as the Council's <br />representative to the Michiana Area Council of Government (MACOG) for several years, and a member of the <br />Century Center Board of Managers. Dr. Varner's term is far the 2010 calendar year. <br />GlendaRae Hernandez, who has a Bachelor's degree from North Central College and has participated on many <br />other cornmunity boards and commissions, was re-appointed as a Council representative to the South Bend <br />Human Rights Commission. Ms. Hernandez's term is for four (4j years. <br />Council Member at Large, Karen L. White, who serves as the Chairperson of the Council's l~[ealth and Public <br />Safety Committee has re-appointed Valerie Schey to serve as a citizen member of that Committee. Ms. Schey <br />has a Bachelor's degree in Biology from the University of Illinois. Ms. Schey has been an active volunteer at the <br />South Bend Animal Care & Control; and is the founder and President of CARE of South Bend. <br />Council President Dieter commended each of the four (4j individuals who have volunteered to be appointed by the <br />Common Council. He noted that each of these individuals brings exceptional knowledge and countless hours of <br />service, which will be most beneficial for each of the boards, commissions or committees where they will serve. <br />The City Council is grateful for each of these four (4j individual's willingness to serve. <br />-30- <br />
