<br />The following communication was read and ordered, placed on file:

<br />Gentlemen:
<br />The State Division of Public Health, with its Bureau of Sanitary Engineer-
<br />ing, operates under the statutes of the State of Indiana. Upon re ceivinp complaints,
<br />it is the function of this division to authorize and to make investipatinns in the
<br />field and laboratory, to recommend corrective action to be taken, and, if necessary,
<br />to order such remedial measures to be made in the interest of public health.
<br />The State 'division of Public Health finds that the city of South Bend
<br />discharges raw sewage and industrial waste into the St. Joseph River abd streams
<br />tributary thereto which creates a. menance to public health and discomfort to citizens
<br />living adjacent to the streams under conditions of minimum flow of the stream.
<br />An official regnort was submitted to the City of South Bend in 1930 setting
<br />forth these conditions and made recommendations for corrective measures to abate
<br />and eliminate the gross pollution.
<br />The Board of the State Division of Public Health will meet in an official
<br />session on 'fiednesda.y, October ?,5, 1933, and will grant ,your city a hearing. It is,
<br />therefore, requested that Honorable vVm. R. Hinkle, and the Board of Public Works of the
<br />City of South Bend, be present at the meeting of the Board, State House Annex Build -
<br />in ,, Indianapolis, at 3 P. 11. Wednesday, October 25, 1933.

<br />In the matter of the above communication, VV'. S. 17oore, City Engineer,
<br />advised the Board that the 1"_ayor had instructed him to advise the D ivision of Public
<br />health that he, the Layor, , and the Board of Public V orks members would be -present at
<br />the meeting scheduled for 'Vvednesday, October 25, 1933, at 3 P. 1".., in Indianapolis.
<br />Claims in the sum of "�812.39 for various departments were signed and
<br />approved by the Bcr rd.
<br />The Board approved nay roll claims in the sum of �';?3 , 300.83 for various
<br />departments.
