Tim Sexton reported that the Blue and Gold game was a success as was Relay for life. }
Thousands of people participated in the race. On June 7th there will be a ribbon cutting ceremony
for the new turbo machinery at Ignition Park.
Notre Dame is looking into homes on Washington Street. The students need to represent both
Notre Dame and South Bend respectfully as well as be treated with respect from the community.
HOLY CROSS COLLEGE UPDATES/CONCERNS
Holy Cross is beginning pre-engineering track for their students. There has been a concerted
effort by the college to do more music and performing arts in the community and we are really
seeing benefits from the closer collaboration of the local colleges.
INDIANA UNIVERSITY SOUTH BEND UPDATES/CONCERNS
This is the last week of classes for IUSB and finals are next week. Graduation will take place on
May 10th at the Joyce Center. IUSB is running commercials about their graduates and their
impact on the local community which have been received very well by the community.
RESIDENTS/NEIGHBORS UPDATES AND CONCERNS
Matt Costello reported that it was a rough weekend with the Blue Gold Game. Lots of large
house parties and obnoxious behavior from the students. There was a very good response from
University officials. Mr. Costello stressed that he wished there was more consequences but that's
hard since it's the last semester for many of these students.
Tasha Reed Outlaw reported that many of those properties will get some hefty fines as a result.
Marguerite Taylor stated this committee began out of some of these issues and the progress has
been tremendous. She had a great experience this weekend. The neighborhood has really grown a
lot and turned around a lot of the nasty parts.
ALCOHOL &BEVERAGE BOARD
Mr. Slavinskas reported that there are going to be more excess officers checking more stores in
St. Joe County. Most of these stores are not trying to sell alcohol to minors and the key is giving
them the tools to discover a fake I.D. and what to look for. Since this is a college community,
alcohol stores do have to be more vigilant.
CITY OF SOUTH BEND UPDATES/CONCERNS
Common Council: There is an excitement about the redevelopment of the Westside. We have a
big poverty problem in South Bend and we need to be conscious of gentrification. South Bend
can be a model City of how we redevelop without displacing current residents.
Code Enforcement: Trash and grass ordinances are a concern and house parties as well. The
department responded to a few calls Saturday morning after the game. They want to work with
everyone to work on these troubled properties.
The Committee set the next meeting for September 6th starting at 3:30 p.m. at the County-City
Building.
2
