First to appear before the Board was the Hon. George A. Schock, and reported
the damage to the curbing and large trees in front of his property at 1003 Riverside
Drive, caused by the activities of the Santucci Construction Company and tree trimmer
employed by this contractor. The Board endeavored to assure Mr. Schock that proper
restoration and reimbursement for irreplaceable damage will be made by the Santucci
Construction Company.
Next appeared before the Board, Robert L. Huff, Secretary of the City Planning
Commission, and discussion then centered upon the real property recently acquired by the
City from Jerry Claeys and Evadna CIaeys, with a view to determining width of an addition'
al strip of land required to provide a lot of sufficient size to be deemed a desirable
residential site. In the opinion of both Mr. Huff and the City Engineer, an additional
ten feet would be required, and steps were ordered to be taken to acquire the required
additional footage from the adjacent property owner.
A letter was received from the City Planning Commission recommending the vacation
of the alley running North and South between Michigan and Main Streets, commencing at the
south line of Dean Street and ending at the North line of Sherwood Street, and this was
referred to the City Engineer for further consideration.
VACATION RESOLUTION NO. 2813
This being the date set, hearing was had on the resolution heretofore adopted by
the Board of Public Works and Safety, for the vacation of the east -west alley running
from Ironwood Drive east to Congress Avenue, between Solomon Avenue and Union Street,
in Edison. Park Subdivision, under Vacation Resolution No. 281X3. The Clerk of the Board
having shown sufficient proofs of publication and no remonstrators having appeared and
no written remonstrances having been filed with the Clerk, it was moved, seconded and
unanimously carried that the said resolution be finally adopted and the said alley be
vacated.
The Engineering Department is directed to prepare an assessment roll covering the
assessment of benefits and the award of damages to the surrounding properties.
The.Board next examined and approved plans and specifications for construction of
Foundations, basements and moving houses on Eddy Street, from Madison Street to Sorin
Street.
The Board directed the Clerk of the Board to advertise for sealed bids for the
construction of Portland Cement Concrete and Pavement Widening and Hot Asphaltic Concretes
Pavement re -'surfacing on Eddy Street from the center of Madison Street to the center of
Sorin Street, in the City of South Bend, Indiana.
Discussion next centered upon the rebuilding of Sample Street, and the necessity
for the removal of muck for a distance of 800 feet east, from Falcon ,Street and the
improving of a section of 400 feet west from Sheridan on an experimental basis; the
total cost, including curbs, being estimated to approximate $100,000.00. No decision j
in the matter was reached. City Engineer, R. S. Andrysiak, being present, requested
Chas. W. Cole & Son, thru their representative, Edward A. Smith, to submit estimate
on this project, on a square yeard price basis, with a view to the possibility of order-
ing the legal advertising for bids to proceed at the next regular meeting of the Board.
The Board next considered the installation of an underground tank of 8,000 gallon
capacity, at the rear of the Lafayette Building, for the purpose of serving the proposed
new oil heating unit for this building. The Board examined sketch indickting location
of tank, intake, vent, and feed -line, and specifications calling for a concrete mat
seven inches thick, reinforced with 6" x 611 wire mesh extending two feet beyond the
extreme dimensions of the tank, to -wit: the tank being 81 x 21t; the mat must be 121 x 251.
It was the decision of the Board to rant permissio for thhe i stall t'on o t 1
