59 • • • • 1 First appeared before the Board, Engineer Edward J. Golightly, representing the H0, G. Christman Construction Co., Inc., who presented a drawing of the Indiana Bell Telephone Companyts office building, at the corner of Main and Wayne Streets, and the occupancy of sidewalk and street the contractor will require in connection with the construction work planned to get under way about September lst. i In the absence of the City Engineer, the Board deferred action until its next !j regular meeting. STREET DEPARTMENT: Street Commissioner, H. M. Tomlinson, being present, again brought to the Board Is attention the serious condition in the 3200 block South Fellows Street, due to cave-ins where sewer construction was completed during the past winter and fill-in used was the clay removed in excavating for the laying of the sewer. The Commissioner stated that the contractor -has attempted four times to restore the street paving at this location unsuccessfully, and expressed his opinion that the problem is one requiring special engineering. The Board directed the Commissioner to again contact the contractor and insist upon his having his engineer give this situation the attention necessary to make lasting restoration of the paving. The Board next considered the Engineerts Report concerning bids for the improve- ment`:of LAWTON STREET from the,_west line of Olive Street to the east line of Washington Street by constructing a Class C pavement in accordance with Improvement Resolution No. 2759, 1953, and confirmed by this Board on August 3, 1953,and hereby report that after examining the several bids submitted to the Board on August 17, 1953, and find that the Reed'Construction Company, Mishawaka, Indiana has the lowest and best bid for a Class C, type j, Bituminous Concrete AH pavement and also that Reed Construction Company has the lowest and best bid for a Class C, type .3, Bituminous.Concrete AH pavement and recommend that the kind of pavement placed on the above street be Class C, type 1 !? Ij PRELIMINARY ORDER - RESOLUTION NO. 2759 - 1953 Whereas, the Board of Public Works and Safety pursuant to its notice to do so, met on the 17th day of August, 1953, at the hour of 10:00 A. M. CST and publicly opened and II considered all bids for the improvement of LAWTON STREET from the west line of Olive Street to the east line of Washington Street by constructing a Class C pavement in accordance with Improvement Resolution No. 2759, 1953, passed by this Board on June 29, 1953, and confirmed by this Board on August 3rd, therefore BE IT RESOLVED, that the roadway of said street be improved by paving with a Class C. type 1, Cement Concrete pavement. The matter of the truck chassis and body bids for the Garbage Department, opened at the regular meeting of the Board, Monday, August 10, 1953, was again deferred for further consideration. The matter of the acoustics of the Council Chambers was next given the attention of the Board. It was suggested that improved acoustics would be obtained by the removal of the gallery, and that this space would be of real value if made available for files and storing of municipal records. The Board directed the Clerk to obtain an estimate of the cost of such alteration from Messrs. Torok and Meiners to present to the Board at an early date. Contractorls Bonds, each in the sum of $1,000.00, were examined and approved for the four contractors as follows: William Frankfort Walter A. Skiles William H.
