Christman Construction Co., Inc., who presented a drawing of the Indiana Bell <br />Telephone Companyts office building, at the corner of Main and Wayne Streets, and the <br />occupancy of sidewalk and street the contractor will require in connection with the <br />construction work planned to get under way about September lst. <br />i In the absence of the City Engineer, the Board deferred action until its next <br />!j regular meeting. <br />STREET DEPARTMENT: <br />Street Commissioner, H. M. Tomlinson, being present, again brought to the Board Is <br />attention the serious condition in the 3200 block South Fellows Street, due to cave-ins <br />where sewer construction was completed during the past winter and fill-in used was the <br />clay removed in excavating for the laying of the sewer. The Commissioner stated that <br />the contractor -has attempted four times to restore the street paving at this location <br />unsuccessfully, and expressed his opinion that the problem is one requiring special <br />engineering. The Board directed the Commissioner to again contact the contractor and <br />insist upon his having his engineer give this situation the attention necessary to make <br />lasting restoration of the paving. <br />The Board next considered the Engineerts Report concerning bids for the improve- <br />ment`:of LAWTON STREET from the,_west line of Olive Street to the east line of Washington <br />Street by constructing a Class C pavement in accordance with Improvement Resolution <br />No. 2759, 1953, and confirmed by this Board on August 3, 1953,and hereby report that <br />after examining the several bids submitted to the Board on August 17, 1953, and find <br />that the Reed'Construction Company, Mishawaka, Indiana has the lowest and best bid <br />for a Class C, type j, Bituminous Concrete AH pavement and also that Reed Construction <br />Company has the lowest and best bid for a Class C, type .3, Bituminous.Concrete AH pavement <br />and recommend that the kind of pavement placed on the above street be Class C, type 1 !? <br />Cement Concrete Pavement. Ij <br />PRELIMINARY ORDER - RESOLUTION NO. 2759 - 1953 <br />Whereas, the Board of Public Works and Safety pursuant to its notice to do so, met <br />on the 17th day of August, 1953, at the hour of 10:00 A. M. CST and publicly opened and <br />II considered all bids for the improvement of LAWTON STREET from the west line of Olive <br />Street to the east line of Washington Street by constructing a Class C pavement in <br />accordance with Improvement Resolution No. 2759, 1953, passed by this Board on June 29, <br />1953, and confirmed by this Board on August 3rd, therefore <br />BE IT RESOLVED, that the roadway of said street be improved by paving with a Class <br />C. type 1, Cement Concrete pavement. <br />I. Crothers <br />Clerk of t e Boar . <br />The matter of the truck chassis and body bids for the Garbage Department, opened <br />at the regular meeting of the Board, Monday, August 10, 1953, was again deferred for <br />further consideration. <br />The matter of the acoustics of the Council Chambers was next given the attention <br />of the Board. It was suggested that improved acoustics would be obtained by the removal <br />of the gallery, and that this space would be of real value if made available for files <br />and storing of municipal records. The Board directed the Clerk to obtain an estimate <br />of the cost of such alteration from Messrs. Torok and Meiners to present to the Board <br />at an early date. <br />Contractorls Bonds, each in the sum of $1,000.00, were examined and approved for <br />the four contractors as follows: <br />William Frankfort <br />Walter A.
