<br />Street Commissioner, H. M. Tomlinson, being present brought to the attention of
<br />jthe Board, the fact that employees of the Dependable Disposal Company have, this past 1
<br />• ;week, been informing householders that garbage will'not be picked up, unless it is at
<br />ithe curb, and stating further that this was "the Mayor's orders". The Board, thereupon,;
<br />'directed a letter to the Dependable Disposal Company reminding them that except where
<br />;there are no alleys, the resident is not required to place the garbage at the curb and
<br />!requesting that they inform their personnel accordingly.
<br />r A request placed with the Board by Attorney Walter L. Clements to permit the
<br />;Legion of Mary the use of their "Book Barrow" on the downtown streets in connection with
<br />;the distributing of Catholic literature on the non-profit basis, was next considered
<br />and approved, and the Clerk was directed to inform Miss Mary Phelps, 908 Donmoyer Avenue,
<br />of the Legion of Mary, that such permission is granted.
<br />jThe request of the O'Brien Corporation for permission to close Johnson Street from
<br />• ',Washington Avenue to Colfax Avenue on the day of the O'Brien "Open House" on or about
<br />�I,September 2nd was next examined Request was granted and the Clerk directed to so
<br />!?inform The O'Brien Corporation.
<br />Next appeared before the Board, Commander Hollis Johnson, V.F.W. Post 9733, asking
<br />permission for the barricading of Brookfield Street for a distance of one-half block 3
<br />;from Washington and a portion of west Colfax Avenue, required for activities in connection
<br />�with the V.F.W. Post 9733 Festival to be conducted on the evenings of August 18th to 23rd'l
<br />linclusive, from 6:00 P.M. to 12:00 P.M. Permission was also granted V.F.W. Post 9733
<br />Ito use a remodeled fire truck for the purpose of advertising the festival on Chapin Stree
<br />il
<br />;and Western Avenue, with the stipulation that this vehicle will not create a nuisance
<br />';through the use of undue noise in attracting the attention of the public.
<br />`a Matters referred to the Board by the Common Council, under date of August 12th,
<br />in accordance with motions made and carried at their last regular meeting, Monday, August:
<br />?lOth, were next considered, and the Clerk was directed to notify the South Shore Railway
<br />;Company to make the needed repairs suggested by Councilman Niezgodski. The Board brought;,
<br />to the attention of Street Commissioner, H. M. Tomlinson, the inadequacy of catch basins
<br />in connection with the storm sewers along Lincoln Way East in the immediate vicinity of
<br />1Playland Park, as described in motion made by Councilman Glass.
<br />The Board next examined and approved plan of proposed opening of Grant Street in
<br />'accord with drawing submitted with dedication of Grant Street, carrying the approval
<br />. of the City Plan Commission, granted August 6, 1953, subject to the approval of the
<br />alignment by the City Engineer. Dedication was then signed by the Board members I. A.
<br />;Hurwich and G. P. Ziegler, and the Clerk was directed to return these papers to the

<br />Plans for the following street improvements, prepared by Wilbur H. Gartner and
<br />. ;;Associates, Civil Engineers, were next examined and approved by the Board:

<br />Plans for sewer improvement on Chimes Blvd. from MacArthur Avenue to Rockne Drive,
<br />prepared by Wilbur H. Gartner and Associates, Civil Engineers, were examined and approved
<br />by the Board.
<br />Sewer plans for the -following locations in Twyckenham Hills Addition, Section "G",
<br />submitted by W. S. Moore, Engineer, were examined and approved.

<br />Grade, curb, and walk improvement plans for Lawrence Street from Napoleon Boulevard
<br />to Pokagon Street, and for St. Louis Boulevard from Napoleon Boulevard to Angela Boulevard,
<br />submitted by Wm. S. Moore, Engineer, were examined and approved by the Board.
<br />This being the time set for the opening of bids, the chairman of the Board so
<br />announced. At this juncture, Mr. Hurwieh, also announced that awarding of contracts in
<br />the matter of the bids covering chassis and bodies for the Garbage Department, will be
<br />deferred until Thursday, August 20, 1953 at the earliest, and possibly will not be made
<br />before the next regular meeting, Monday, August 24, 1953-
