<br />A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works was held Monday, June 29, 1953, at
<br />10:00 A. M. Mr. G. P. Ziegler was absent. Minutes of the previous meeting were read

<br />The Board examined and approved the following agreement, submitted by Traffic
<br />Engineer, E. H. Miller, between the State of Indiana, through the State Highway Depart-
<br />ment of Indiana and the City of South Bend, Indiana:
<br />THIS AGREEIENT TRADE AND ENTERED INTO by and between the STATE OF INDIANA,
<br />through the State Highway Department of Indiana, and the City of South Bend,
<br />through its duly authorized and undersigned officials hereinafter referred
<br />to as the "City" witnesseth:
<br />WHEREAS, the City ha
<br />purpose of regulatin
<br />and Sheridan Avenue;
<br />(Prairie Avenue) and
<br />Street; and U. S. 31
<br />and
<br />s requested that signal equipment be installed for the
<br />traffic at the intersection of S. R. 2 (Western Avenue)
<br />S. R. 2 (Western Avenue) and Taylor Street; S. R. 123
<br />Indiana Avenue; U. S. 31 (Michigan Street) and Garat
<br />(Michigan Street) and Chippewa Avenue within said City,
<br />WHEREAS, the State Highway Department deems the regulation of traffic by
<br />means of signal devices, as hereinafter designated, to be beneficial to
<br />traffic on said S. R. 2, S. R. 123, and U. S. 31 to the extent of the cost
<br />of the materials and equipment.
<br />IT IS THEREFORE AGREED BY AND BETWEEN the State, through said Department,
<br />and said City, that such traffic facilities shall be installed under terms
<br />and conditions as follows:
<br />(1) The City, with its own forces, inconsideration of the benefits to
<br />traffic using said streets, shall perform, all work of installation of
<br />such facilities and the State, through said Department, hereby grants
<br />said City permission to enter upon said S. R. 2, S. R. 123, and U. S. 31
<br />for the performance of such work.
<br />(2) That the work of installation to be performed by the City shall be so
<br />performed in accordance with the rules and regulations of the Department,
<br />and said work shall be so performed under the supervisic`A��and to the
<br />satisfaction of the Department.
<br />(3) The major electrical signal materials and major electrical signal equip-
<br />ment required in said traffic signal installations shall be furnished and
<br />paid for by the State Highway Department.
<br />(4) On and after the completion of the work of installation, the signal devices
<br />so installed shallbe the property of, and subject to the control of the State,
<br />through said Department, under rules and regulations of the Department and laws
<br />of the State now in force or hereinafter enacted, and the maintenance of such
<br />equipment and signal facilities shall be at the expense of the State, through
<br />said Department.
<br />(5) The electric energy required to operate the signal facilities shall be
<br />furnished by the City.
<br />(6) The City shall begin installing the traffic signal equipment not later than
<br />sixty (60) days after receiving the plans :and specifications from the Department
<br />for said signal installations.
<br />• A letter was received from the City Plan Commission, accompanied by blueprint,
<br />outlining a 7 acre tract of land west of Hickory Road (Logan Street) and south of
<br />Edison Road, for which Land Developers Co., Inc. have petitioned for annexation to
<br />the City of South Bend. The Board directed the Clerk to notify the City Plan that
