<br />A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works was held Monday, May ll, 1953 at
<br />10:00 A. M. All members were present. Minutes of the previous regular meeting and also
<br />special meeting were read and approved. Salary claims in the amount of $23,606.48
<br />were approved. Claims of the following suppliers, in the amount of 27,971.19, were
<br />approved and ordered paid:

<br />and Measures, appeared before the Board,
<br />asking permission for his attendance
<br />at the National Conference of Weights and
<br />Measures
<br />to be held in Washington, D. C. on May 19, 20,
<br />21 and 22nd. The Board granted
<br />its
<br />permission.
<br />Next appeared before the Board, William Ellis, 124 N. Studebaker Street, chairman
<br />.of the parade committee, for the Knights of Pythias, asking permission of the Board
<br />for a parade to be held on Sunday, July 5th, on Michigan Street and other downtown
<br />'streets in connection with the State Convention of the Knights of Pythias to be held
<br />in South Bend at that time. The Board granted permission, stipulating that no horses
<br />are to' be used in the parade.
<br />Permission was next granted by the Board to the Poppy Committee, American Legion
<br />'Auxiliary, Post 50, to conduct their annual sale of poppies, in the usual manner, on
<br />May 22nd and May 23rd.
<br />Permission was next granted to Mrs. Louis Schlamberg, Chairman of the Poppy Sales
<br />'Committee, Jewish War Veterans Auxiliary, Post 318, to conduct their annual poppy sale,
<br />in the usual manner, on the date of Wednesday, July lst.
<br />Permission was next granted by the Board to the Pioneer Women for their Child
<br />'Rescue Fund, to conduct their Tag Day Flower Sale on Monday, June 22nd.
<br />Next appeared before the Board, Mrs. Edith Gunter, Manager of Red Robin, Inc.,
<br />complaining of the size of the new newsstand in front of their place of business,
<br />specificially of the added size due to the two telephone booths and the excessive
<br />amount of litter which accumulates in front of their store because of the newsstand.
<br />;It was also stated these phone booths become a public nuisance because of their frequent
<br />use at night as urinals. it was suggested the sidewalk on the Washington Avenue side
<br />of the American Trust Company, would be a more suitable location for the newsstand.
<br />'Mention was also made of the interference this stand, in its present location, causes
<br />in the loading and unloading of bus passengers. The Board informed Mrs. Gunter, the
<br />matter will be placed in the hands of the Traffic Engineer for investigation and solution
<br />.of the problem involved.
<br />Sewer plans for Lombardy Drive, Ridgeway, and the intersection of Lombardy Drive
<br />.and Ridgeway, also the sewer plan for the Colpaert Realty Company's office building at
<br />Lombardy Drive and Western Avenue, were examined and approved by the Board.
<br />IMPROVEMENT RESOLUTION CONFIRMED
<br />RESOLUTION NO. 2749 - 1953
<br />For the improvement of MISHAWAKA AVENUE (NORTH SIDE) under Improvement Resolution
<br />No. 2749 - 1953, adopted April 13, 1953, from the east line of Twyckenham Drive to the
<br />west line of Greenlawn Avenue by constructing a Class 110 Type 4A Pavement.
<br />After hearing all persons interested who appeared and being fully advised on the
<br />premises and the Clerk of the Board having shown proofs of publication of the notices
<br />to property owners and the same having been found sufficient, the Board decides that
<br />,the benefits to the property liable to be assessed for said improvement are equal to
<br />:the estimated cost of the same as reported by the City Civil Engineer, therefore
<br />BE IT RESOLVED, by the Board of Public Works and Safety of the City of South Bend,
<br />Indiana, that Improvement Resolution No. 2749, 1953, duly passed by this Board on April
<br />13, 1953, for the above improvement, be and the same is hereby in all things confirmed,
<br />,and the improvement is hereby ordered to be made.
