Nolan, Contractor 15,841.95 <br />PARKING METER DEPARTMENT: <br />Abbott Coin Counter Co. 1.58- <br />First appeared before the Board representatives of the Goodwill Industries, Inc. <br />with plans for the construction of a fire escape for use on their building 'at 316 Chapin <br />• Street. Plans were examined and referred to the Building Commissioner for his exam- <br />ination and approval. <br />Attorney Arthur Goulet then appeared before the Board, and E. H. Miller, Traffic <br />Engineer, being present, was called upon by the Board to make his report in the matter <br />of the indiscriminate parking situation on South Franklin Street, from Garst Street <br />to Broadway, this being the matter with which attorney Goulet is concerned. Engineer <br />Miller outlined in considerable detail the steps he has taken, in conjunction with <br />Everett I. Henthorn, Chief of Plant Portection of the Studebaker Corporation. Their <br />plans for the relief of this condition, which has involved driving across sidewalks and <br />lawns on the part of Studebaker employees, was satisfactory to attorney Goulet. He <br />asked that it be put into effect as quickly as possible. <br />jl <br />i TRAFFIC DEPARTMENT: <br />E. H. Miller, Traffic Engineer, was present and brought to the attention of the <br />Board, the urgency for the construction of islands at the intersections of Goodland <br />Avenue and Bendix Drive, and Westmoor and Bendix Drive. Also the installation of traffic <br />signals at Gate No.4 at the Bendix Plant. He stated that the matter has been under <br />discussion between himself and Mr. Ed Prang of the Bendix Aviation Corporation, and <br />that Bendix Aviation Corporation is agreeable to providing the funds and paying for a <br />substantial part of the work involved. The matter was given discussion and a plan <br />decided upon by the Board which will permit the work to get under way at an early date. <br />• Traffic Engineer Miller then brought to the attention of the Board, the need for <br />�an added 12-foot lane on both sides of the highway on East McKinley Avenue from the <br />;West property line of McKinley Terrace on the north side of the highway, extending <br />l west for a distance of approximately 570 feet, and on the south side of the highway, <br />from the east property line of Major's proposed shopping center, a distance of approxi- <br />mately 450 feet to the east, and from the west property line of Major's proposed shopp- <br />ing center, a distance of approximately 280 feet to the west, and along the entire <br />front of Major's proposed shopping center. This improvement would include the entire <br />,curve at this point which has presented a traffic hazard since its original construction. <br />The matter was given some discussion and action will be taken by the Board as soon as it <br />is deemed the propitious time to insure the successful undertaking of this urgently <br />needed highway improvement. <br />• j VACATION RESOLUTION NO. 2754 - 1953 <br />RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS AND SAFETY OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, <br />INDIANA: That it is desirable to vacation the following: <br />I STREETS AND UTILITY EASEMENTS IN THE RECORDED <br />I PLAT OF BELLEVILLE UNIT "D't, AN ADDITION TO <br />THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, EXCEPTING <br />SUCH PORTIONS OF SAMPLE STREET AND MAYFLOWER <br />ROAD AS MAY LIE WITHIN THE BOUNDARIES OF SAID <br />PLAT. <br />The following property may be injuriously or beneficially affected by such <br />vacation: <br />
