Mr. Bert Liss was c alled to witness by t he r emonstrators. Mr. Liss testified that
<br />he was the owner of the Indiana and South Bend Cab Companied, that he .has operated a cab
<br />company in South Bend since 1928, that he has 36 licenses for the South Bend Cab Company
<br />and 19 for the Indiana C.,b Company, that he is not able to operate his entire fleet of
<br />cabs at all times because there is not enough business to keep them going, that he at
<br />times operates 20 or 25 in the South Bend Cab Company, and 15 to 18 in the Indiana Cab
<br />Company. He further testified that his oldest and most experienced men get 4.9% of their
<br />gross earnings.
<br />The Board asked for an idea of what his men earn and he presented some of the pay
<br />'slips which showed that for 63 hours work one man earned $60; for 63 hours - $61.89; 66
<br />hours $68.60; 66 hours - $65.00; 60 hours $70.00, etc. He further testified that his
<br />cabs operated twenty-four hours ai:day, that he maintained three free phones from down toi
<br />I where people may call for cab service, that he keeps all of his eql ipment in good service
<br />and that he has had no complaints from the general public, about the quality or quantity.

<br />other bad weather, and then, other means of transportation are comparable with his.
<br />Statistics were introduced to compare the number of taxicabs in use in South Bend j'
<br />with relation to population as in other cities. Mr. Sands cross examined Mr. Liss. �-
<br />•The following witnesses, were called for the remonstrators: Mrs. Alice Smith, 11-4
<br />Bryan Street; George Buscis, 2344 Dixie Way North, Orville Fansler, 727, Juniper Place;
<br />Rudolph Kramer, 528 Monroe Street and Mr. Alfred Brown, 2250 North Francis Road, all of
<br />South Bend, Indiana, who testified as to the number of calls they answered, the length
<br />of time it took to relay a call after it had been received by the dispatcher, the avera
<br />I earnings made by each driver, the time off they had to take if there were too many cabs
<br />on the streets, the calls they missed because another cab would get to their passenger
<br />first and other questions regarding service to the public. These witnesses were cross
<br />j examined by Mr. Sands.
<br />Mr. Sands then produces records showing the number of building permits issued in
<br />. South Bend and St. Joseph County for new dwellings within the last year, contending
<br />that these were all potential taxi cab users. The Board then took the matter under advise-
<br />ment and will make their decision within the next ten days.
