SPECIAL MEETING <br />June 20, 1951 <br />A Special Meeting of the Board of Public Works was held on Wednesday, June ,20, at <br />10:00 a.m. All members were present, as were Ernest Miller, Traffic Engineer, and Geor <br />Barcza, Captain of the Traffic Division. <br />The following persons were present, representing various trucking concerns: <br />• j _W. Sommers Mr. George Gamus <br />711 South Meade Street 1417 South Meade Street <br />• This meeting was called for the purpose of discussing a petition filed with the Boar <br />of Public Works and Safety remonstrating against the use of Meade Street by heavy trucks <br />and semi -trailers. <br />Mr. Hesselgrave informed the Board that his company, to make way for progress, had <br />recently sold their terminal at Carroll and Columbia Streets and had built a new termi- <br />nal at Olive and Sample Street, unaware that they would be unable to use the streets <br />west,of Olive between Sample and Western Avenue, Mr. McGowan suggested the possibility <br />of making one-way streets to lessen the truck traffic. Mr. N. F. Trump of Shippers <br />Dispatch, said they are anxious to cooperate in any way with the people. He said that <br />he must keep materials going to the factories forthe factories to keep going. He sugges <br />• i ed using five or six streets, assigning various trucking companies to each street and set <br />tang a speed limit at 10 or 15 miles per hour. <br />Mr. Chester Muszynski stated that, in his opinion, none of the streets west of Phill <br />Street are able to bear truck traffic as the ground beneath the streets is muck. Mr. <br />Andrysiak informed the people that Sample Street is on the agenda of paving to be done <br />this summer, but was not sure exactly when the work would be done. Mr. Tucker of Tucker <br />Freight Lines suggested that all trucking companies use Sample Street to Mayflower, May- <br />flower to Western or Lincolnway, excepting emergency runs in which vital materials are <br />needed. <br />There was mush discussion, and the Board finally determined that no solution could <br />• ! be reached at this time. The Board instructed the traffic engineer to establish speed <br />zones .of the absolute minimum speed on these crossing streets until such time as a plan <br />is worked out. He, also, instructed to post signs at Western and Mayflower routing:.:,. <br />i trucks entering the city down Mayflower to Sample Street.
