TRAFFIC DEPAR
to his,Depart:
Ernest Miller, Traffic Engineer, was present and matters pertaining
Were discussed.
Mr. Miller presented his report on the petition to designate Ewing Avenue from Frank
lin Street to Prairie Avenue as a boulevard. In.the above report Mr..Miller indicated
that less than 25% of the truck traffic is thru truck traffic, the balance being inner-ci
truck traffic. Unless some other reason exists, other than the nuisance factor, he sees
no reason why Ewing*Avenue should be designated as a boulevard at this time..,The Board,
therefore, denied the petition.
BUSSES: The,following letter was received from the Northern Indiana Transit, Inc.;
The Honorable Board of Public Works and Safety
City of South Bend
South Bend, Indiana
Gentlemen:
As you know, we unaugurated service on a trial basis into the Edison Park
area on Monday, October 30, 1950. This has been in operation three months,
and at the present time all we are carrying is nine children to school in
the morning and from school in the afternoon. This means that our total
revenue from the entire operation is only 90 at the 5 rate of fare for
school children. Under our contract restrictions it is necessary that we
pay the drivers involved a total of $9.36 per day. No adults of this -.area
are availing themselves of this service.
Under the foregoing conditions, we feel it to be rather out of order to
operate at this cost to merely carry nine children to and from school in
that type of vehicle.
We, therefore, respectfully request permission of your honorable body to
discontinue this operation at the close of school Friday, February 9, 1951,
Your kind consideration of this request will be appreciated.
Yours very truly,
NORTHERN INDIANA TRANSIT, INC.,
By: E. G. Crandon
Vice -President & Gentl Manager
The Board granted the above request.
