154 July 31, 1950 A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works was.held on Monday, July 31, 1950 at 9:30 a.m. All members were present. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and ap- proved. Salary Claims in the amount of $24,790.62 were approved and ordered paid. There were no claims of suppliers to be approved by the Board. !TRAFFIC DEPARTMENT: Mr. Ernest Miller, Traffic Engineer, was present and matters pertai ing to his Department were discussed. ENGINEERING DEPARTMENTContractorts Bonds in the amount of $1,000 were approved and :: ordered filed for SLAB Construction, Incorporated; Frederick G. Julian; John Kuri and Ray 1J. Jones; and, and Kenneth A. McIntyre. ii An Agreement was entered into between the City of South Bend and Belleville Lumber & Supply Company granting to St. Joseph Valley.Railroad Company and their successors, the ;'New York Central Railroad Company,a franchise to construct and lay down railroad tracks 'on Niles Avenue. John F. Gohr d/b/a Niles Excavating Company files a Certificate of Insurance cover- ing workments compensation and public liability and property damage, etc., for the con- struction of a sewer on East Jefferson Boulevard. i The Board approved plans for the street improvement of Washington Street from Kenmor Street to public alley; and, Illinois Street from Washington Street to Linden Avenue for ;!the Colpaert Realty Corporation. The Board approved plans for the construction of sewers for the Crown Development Company, Miami Hills Addition, on Lancaster Drive, Woldhaven Drive, and Dover Drive. A letter was received from the Board of Zoning Appeals requesting the Board►s approv al for the construction of a garage at 216 East Ohio Street. The Board approved the same A petition was received for the improvement of Lombardy Drive from Sample Street to Meadow Lane by the construction of a local sewer. This was referred to the City Engineer for investigation and report. A letter was' received from Mr. and Mrs. Leo Muellner, and adjacent neighbors to the United States Gypsum Company complaining of smoke and gas fumes escaping from the chimney of said Company. The.following letter was written in regard .to the above complaint: ';United States Gypsum Company 1702 South Franklin Street ';South Bend, Indiana ,;Gentlemen: We have again received a series of complaints. from the neighbors adjacent regarding gas fumes and mica particles to your plant Some months ago, one of your representatives appeared before this Board and advised us that steps would be taken to correct this condition. Evidently no satisfactory correcti has been made in your plant. Will you kindly have your engineer appear before the Board next Monday, August 7, and ad- vise what steps you will take to correct this condition. Very truly yours, BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS& SAFETY The Board signed a contract with the Reed Construction Company for the widening of ;WILLIAMS STREET from the south curb line of Western Avenue to the north curb line of Sou !Street by widening the existing pavement on the east and west sides by constructing a ;Class "B", Type 1 - Cement Concrete Pavement. This being the date set for receiving bids for the construction of pavements under Resolution Numbers 2626, 2627, 2634, 2637 and 2638, the following bids were opened and 1publicly read: Rieth-Riley Construction Co.,, A Non -Collusion Affidavit with P. 0. Box #775 a Bid Bond accompanied the bid.
