154 <br />July 31, 1950 <br />A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works was.held on Monday, July 31, 1950 at <br />9:30 a.m. All members were present. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and ap- <br />proved. Salary Claims in the amount of $24,790.62 were approved and ordered paid. There <br />were no claims of suppliers to be approved by the Board. <br />!TRAFFIC DEPARTMENT: Mr. Ernest Miller, Traffic Engineer, was present and matters pertai <br />ing to his Department were discussed. <br />ENGINEERING DEPARTMENTContractorts Bonds in the amount of $1,000 were approved and <br />:: ordered filed for SLAB Construction, Incorporated; Frederick G. Julian; John Kuri and Ray <br />1J. Jones; and, and Kenneth A. McIntyre. <br />ii <br />An Agreement was entered into between the City of South Bend and Belleville Lumber <br />& Supply Company granting to St. Joseph Valley.Railroad Company and their successors, the <br />;'New York Central Railroad Company,a franchise to construct and lay down railroad tracks <br />'on Niles Avenue. <br />John F. Gohr d/b/a Niles Excavating Company files a Certificate of Insurance cover- <br />ing workments compensation and public liability and property damage, etc., for the con- <br />struction of a sewer on East Jefferson Boulevard. <br />i <br />The Board approved plans for the street improvement of Washington Street from Kenmor <br />Street to public alley; and, Illinois Street from Washington Street to Linden Avenue for <br />;!the Colpaert Realty Corporation. <br />The Board approved plans for the construction of sewers for the Crown Development <br />Company, Miami Hills Addition, on Lancaster Drive, Woldhaven Drive, and Dover Drive. <br />A letter was received from the Board of Zoning Appeals requesting the Board►s approv <br />al for the construction of a garage at 216 East Ohio Street. The Board approved the same <br />A petition was received for the improvement of Lombardy Drive from Sample Street to <br />Meadow Lane by the construction of a local sewer. This was referred to the City Engineer <br />for investigation and report. <br />A letter was' received from Mr. and Mrs. Leo Muellner, and adjacent neighbors to the <br />United States Gypsum Company complaining of smoke and gas fumes escaping from the chimney <br />of said Company. The.following letter was written in regard .to the above complaint: <br />';United States Gypsum Company <br />1702 South Franklin Street <br />';South Bend, Indiana <br />,;Gentlemen: <br />We have again received a series of complaints. from the neighbors adjacent <br />regarding gas fumes and mica particles <br />to your plant <br />Some months ago, one of your representatives appeared before this Board and advised us <br />that steps would be taken to correct this condition. Evidently no satisfactory correcti <br />has been made in your plant. <br />Will you kindly have your engineer appear before the Board next Monday, August 7, and ad- <br />vise what steps you will take to correct this condition. <br />Very truly yours, <br />BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS& SAFETY <br />The Board signed a contract with the Reed Construction Company for the widening of <br />;WILLIAMS STREET from the south curb line of Western Avenue to the north curb line of Sou <br />!Street by widening the existing pavement on the east and west sides by constructing a <br />;Class "B", Type 1 - Cement Concrete Pavement. <br />This being the date set for receiving bids for the construction of pavements under <br />Resolution Numbers 2626, 2627, 2634, 2637 and 2638, the following bids were opened and <br />1publicly read: <br />Rieth-Riley Construction Co.,, A Non -Collusion Affidavit with <br />P. 0.
