<br />SPECIAL MEETING - MARCH 31, 1944
<br />A special meeting of the Board of Public Works was held on Friday, March 31, 1944.
<br />All members were present.
<br />The meeting was called to award a contract, the Board having been notified of�.the
<br />approval of a special appropriation, G-rdinance #3478, by the State Tax Board, the
<br />Board now accepts the bid of G. R. Robertson for the repair of the Jefferson Boulevard
<br />Bridge, the bid being in the opinion of the Board the lowest and best bid.
<br />The Clerk of the Board was authorized to notify Mr. Robertson to call at the office
<br />of the Board to execute the contract, and to notify him to pro ceeci with construction.
<br />The Clerk was also authorized to return the bid bonds and checks to the unsuccessful
<br />bidders and to return the successful bidders check after the contract is executed.
<br />There being no further business to come-:be'fore the Board, the meeting was adjourned

<br />A regular meeting of the Board of Public '��orks was held on Monday, April 3, 1944
<br />at 9 t00 A.Y. All members ,were present. Minutes of the last meeting and of the Special
<br />meeting held on March 31, were read and approved. Claims of the following suppliers

<br />STREET DEPARTMENT: Mr. Anthony Zrnudzinski, Street Commissioner, was present and matters
<br />pertaining to his department were discussed.
<br />The Clerk of the Board was authorized to re -advertise for a Tractor for the Street
<br />Department, all bias having been recieved as a result of the last advertisement having
<br />I been rejected.
<br />ENGINEERING DEPART1VIENT: Excavation bonds were approved for the Solitt Construction Com-
<br />pany and Ernest Longway. These were ordered filed.
<br />Mr. C11-de '+4illiams, City Engineer,_ presented a copy of a letter written to Mr.
<br />G. A. Farabaugh, Attorney for the New York Central Railroad Company, calling his attenti � n
<br />to the recomr_endations of the TrL-ffic Engineer on signals for the Meade Street crossing,
<br />the Traffic Engineer's report and recommendations were enclosed with the letter.
<br />Mr. 1JUilliams also submitted to the Board a report on the petition for the elimin-
<br />ation_ of a pond between ',dashington and 'Marshall Stre0i6s and 25th and 26th Streets. The
<br />report in part states, ' The area is considerably lower than the established grade of th
<br />abutting streets and would provide an ideal location for a City durip. This would pro-
<br />vide a means of filling the area, as requested by the petitioners. However, the lots
<br />are privately owned and it is doub]-tful that the owners would be interested in this meth
<br />od of filling their property. In addition, it is very lik_e17 to create objections from
<br />neighboring property owners and citizens. Until the propert7r owners in the general
<br />area petition for a trunk sewer on Jefferson Blvd., from 26th Street to Logan Street,
<br />the draining of this area will remain an impossiblity. The trunk sewer that will even-
<br />tually drain this area now terminates at 26th Street on Jefferson Blvd.' A copy of

<br />Mr. G. R. Robertson was present at the 1"eetin- to sign the contrL-ct for the repairs
<br />to the Jefferson Street Bridge. The contract was signed by Mr. Robertson and his partne
<br />I!+Ir. Julius Stevens, and their certified check was then returned to them. The clerk of t
<br />Board informed the Board that the other certified checks accompanying bids on the repair
<br />,I had been returned to the unsuccessful bidders.
<br />!� WHEREAS, plats with dedications of streets and alleys indicated thereon, are now pr
<br />,sented to the Board, to be Imown as Southmore Heights and Beacon heights in South Bend,I
<br />AND, these plats and dedications are recorded in Book /,5- , Pages , in the Reci
<br />Office of St. Joseph County.
