Introduction
We are requesting that two parking spots on the east -bound lane of Jefferson Blvd, immediately east of
Lafayette Blvd, be designated as electric vehicle (EV) charging spots only. A map of the parking spots is
below.
Spot 1: Sole use as a permanent parking spot for the city's EV. City staff will have the ability to
reserve use of the EV via Outlook, similar to reserving a conference room.
Spot 2: Two hour public parking for EVs only.
This project will accomplish several items.
First, it will allow city employees to utilize the city's EV for off -site meetings and other transportation.
This will a) decrease the utilization of fossil fuels from employees using their personal gasoline cars and
b) decrease the time spent talking to and from the general parking areas.
Second, it will advertise and educate the public regarding EV chargers and South Bend's commitment to
sustainability and future transportation options.
Third, this project will act as a pilot for future EV charger installations, It is important to know how our
population will use EV charging stations once they are available to the public.
Descriptions of attached photos
Proposed Changes 1
- Spot 1: City EV only location
- Spot 2: Public EV only location, with 2 hour limit
Proposed Changes 2
- Side view of parking locations
Spot 1 was created during restriping after Smart Streets construction was complete. As you can see
near the front of the blue truck in Proposed Changes 2, there is a No Parking sign currently installed,
indicating that Spot 1 should not be utilized by any vehicle.
There was concern that the striping was a mistake and there should instead be a double white line for a
turning radius barrier. However, photos from before Smart Streets show the turning radius barrier ends
before the newly created parking spot.
Before Photo — Aerial
- The area inside the red circle shows the double white line ending at the manhole cover.
Before Photo —Ground
- This verifies the end of the double white line at the manhole cover and between the two traffic
signal cabinets.
After Photo — Ground
- Shows that the newly created No Parking spot ends before the manhole cover, a few feet after
the end of the double white line turning radius barrier.
