2016 Annual Report— Department of Code Enforcement 12 Hearing Process One of our goals for the past couple of years has been to Civil Penalties imposed per Year increase compliance with,and attendance of, Code Enforcement Hearings. In pursuance of that goal,we _ continue to send expired repair orders back through the 219 hearing process if there were no repairs made and/or no 300 extensions requested. Our objective is to relay to the 305 property owner we are serious about the property being brought up to the standards of their neighborhood,the International Property Maintenance Code, and city 02016 02015 02014 ordinances. We continue to ask for civil penalties against owners who show a willful neglect of their properties. Willful neglect Hearing Type Distribution may mean the owner fails to attend Code Enforcement 0.5% 1.2% Hearings, has multiple violations, and/or has been given 17.5% II ample opportunity to make repairs/clean the property and fails to do so. The civil penalty amount is determined on a case-by-case basis. Our goal is to get the property repaired and/or cleaned, not to create a financial hardship. Additionally,for all properties that are scheduled for a 13.0% hearing we now request that they also be affirmed for continuous enforcement as part of the order. This permits us to secure the property, mow the grass, and remove trash 67.8% and debris without notification. In 2016, 1,104 cases went through the hearing process.
