January 16, 1961 <br />A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held on Mondayy;,January <br />169 1961 at 10:00 A.M. All members were present. Minutes of the last regular <br />meeting were read and approved. Vouchers were approved and ordered paid to <br />the various suppliers. <br />RE: TRAFFIC 9A 7ARn= (EUNICE AND MCKINLEY) <br />IAt has been brought to the attention of the Board that a traffic hazard:', exists <br />at Eunice Drive and McKinley due to a parking area at this location. In order <br />to protect life and property, Vernon Lane, Building Department Commissioner <br />and Clem Hazinski, Traffic Engineer,were instructed by the Board to investigate <br />this situation thoroughly and report findings and recommendation back to the <br />Board. Until steps are taken to correct this Hazardous condition, the Board <br />does not want parking at"this site. <br />_BUILDING DEPARTMENT - HEARINGS <br />Comes now John Grabarz with reference to hearing on property located at 122 N. <br />Studebaker Street. Comes also the owner, Mrs. Imogene Nailon to show cause <br />why the above described property has not been brought up to standard. Mrs. <br />Nailon requested the Board for an extension in order to bring property up to <br />standard. Request granted and hearing continued until July 1, 1961. If <br />property is not up to standard in accordance with the--Buildinq:Department <br />specifications, said building will be ordered demolished. <br />With reference to property at 313 N. Scott Street, owned by Mr. Obert, a hearing <br />on this originally scheduled for January 9, 1961 and continued until this date <br />was held. Mr. Oberg's brother appeared to show cause why this property has <br />not been brought up to standard. The Board, having heard that the owner is <br />in the U.S. armed services, directed Mr. Grabarz to give copy of requirements <br />for this property to Mr. Oberg's brother and continued this hearing for <br />two weeks, or until January 30, 1961. <br />_BUILDING DEPARTMENT REQUEST (ADVERTISE FOR BIDS) <br />Comes now Vernon Lane, Building Commissioner, and requests permission to <br />advertise for bids for the purchase of an automobile for the Building Depart- <br />ment in accordance with specifications. <br />The Board, having been advised that the matter has been checked with the City <br />Controller's office and that sufficient money has been provided in the bfadget <br />for 1961 Building Department for such a purchase, request was granted. Clerk <br />of the Board was directed to place advertisements in the South Bend Tribune and <br />The Record on January 20 and January 27 for sealed bids. Said bids will be <br />opened on January 30, 1961 at 10:00 A.M. <br />FIRE DEPARTMENT (FIRE STATION NO. 1�) IMPROVEMENT <br />The Board, having determined t-hal it is necessary to have the services of an <br />architect in connection with the improvement and/or enlargement of Fire Station <br />No. 13 now requests Mr. Callix Miller to submit contract for such improvement. <br />POLICE DEPARTMENT APPOINTMENTS <br />The following applicants to the Police Department, having been examined by the <br />Pension Board and having been referred to the examining physician for examination <br />and having been found to be physically and mentally capable, the Board now <br />approves the appointment of said applicants, effective January 16, 1961; <br />Robert Werntz, Walter Szynski, Frederick P. Odusch, Thomas Frederick Gustafson; <br />Norbert J. Hechlinski, Norbert Turzynski. <br />POLICE DEPARTMENT APPLICATION <br />An application for the Police Department from Harold LaVerne Barry was accepted <br />and ordered placed on file. <br />POLICE DEPARTMENT PROMOTION <br />Upon the recommendation of the Police Chief of Police Officer William Thomas <br />was promoted to the rank of Detective Serseant as of January 16, 1961. <br />
