August 1, 1960 <br />A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held on Monday, August 1, <br />1960 at 10:00 A.M. All members were present. Minutes of the previous meeting <br />and the special meeting were read and approved. Vouchers were approved and <br />ordered paid to the various suppliers. <br />Comes now the Fire Chief with a letter from the Firemen's Pension Fund reporting <br />that with the termination of Arthur J. Howard's service with the Fire Department <br />on August '16, 1960 the vacancy created by this pension grant also causes a <br />vacancy in the secretaryship of the Firemen's Pension Fund. The Board of <br />Trustees has chosen William Joseph Doran to serve in the capacity of secretary <br />of the board of trustees of the Firemen's Pension Fund until the term of office <br />is terminated on the second Monday of February, 1963 or until a vacancy may <br />occur when, in such event, the provisions of pension fund procedure shall <br />again become enforced. The Board approves theaction of the Pension Fund <br />trustees and orders the letter placed on file. <br />Mr. Edward Palicki's application to become a member of the Fire Department was <br />approved and he was so sworn in by the City Clerk:. Appointment to the Department <br />will become effective August 19 1960. <br />The application of Edward W. Palicki for admission to the Firemen's Pension <br />Fund has been considered by the trustees and accepted. The Board approves <br />the action of the Pension Fund Board. <br />A recommendation b Nicholas Horvath Superintendent of the Electrical Department <br />� Y � P P <br />for the installation of a 2500 lumen street light on Columbus Court first pole <br />East of LaPorte Avenue was approved. <br />A monthly report from the Police Department for,the month of June, 1960 was <br />examined and ordered placed on file. <br />Street Light Outage Reports from the Electrical Department were examined by the <br />Board and ordered placed on file. <br />A progress report on the truck traffic in Columbus Court was made by the Traffic <br />Engineer. The Traffic Engineer did not recommend the elimination of truck <br />traffic because this would force trucks onto the streets contributing to con- <br />gestion. It was his recommendation that the roadway be widened by reducing <br />the width of the sidewalks. The report was referred to the City Engineer for <br />further study. <br />A report from the Traffic Engineer following the request by a representative <br />of Courtesy Cab Company for an additional cab stand in front of 118 W. Colfax <br />Avenue was presented to the Board. Measurements of the present parking space, <br />show that there is insufficient curb space for an additional cab stand. It is <br />recommended that meter #2 in front of 116 W. Colfax Avenue be removed and that <br />the remaining space be converted to a cab stand. Following the recommendation <br />of the Traffic Engineer, the request was approved. <br />A rcertificate of Insurance for Robert W. Ham, doing business as Ham Wrecking <br />Company issued to the City of South Bend for wrecking one story partial building <br />at 125 E. Sample Street was examined and approved. <br />Comes now Earl Schroeder, 1013 Greenlawn Avenue before the Board with a complaint <br />against the Associates Investment Company facility at 1722 Ruskin Street. Mr. <br />Schroeder informed the Board that smoke from the chimney is a nuisance to the <br />area and requests relief. The Clerk of theBoard was directed to address a <br />letter to the Associates Investment Company concerning this matter and request <br />their cooperation. <br />Mr. Schroeder also requests the Board to take action on a hazard in the way of <br />bushes that, he claims, obstruct the view on the corner of St. Peter and St. <br />Vincent's Street. Also, he asks that bushes be inspected at 1120 St. Peter <br />Street. The matter was referred to the Traffic Engineer for investigation and <br />report. <br />Comes now Vernon Lane, Buildinq_Ppmmisst-oner, with a request to move a house <br />owned by Mr. Malo, from 920 N. Francis Street to 1116 N. St. Peter Street. <br />1P <br />
