Miss Virginia Guthrie,_ Executive Secretary of the South Bend Civic Planning <br />Associations. proposed that consideration be given to the retaining of Meter <br />Maids to replace police officers in the regulation of traffic meters and, <br />further, requests the Board to consider the use of dogs for police.work.:and <br />that the budgetary matters involved in the above suggestions be provided <br />for in the 1961 budget. <br />The Chief of Police was directed by the Board to meet with Miss Guthrie <br />concerning the above suggestions and to report back to the Board his recommenda- <br />tions for further consideration. <br />There being no further business to come before the,Board, the meeting was <br />adjourned at 11:00 A,'M. <br />Attest: <br />Chairma <br />July 189 1960 <br />A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held on Monday, July 18, <br />1960 at 10:00 A.M. All members were present. Minutes of the.previous meeting <br />were read and approved. Vouchers were approved and ordered paid to the <br />various suppliers. , 1. <br />A request from Russell K. Reece of the Fire.Department asked for leave of <br />absence from the South Bend Fire Department for a period of 14 months. The <br />Board has discussed this matter with the Fire Chief and feels if said fireman <br />has opportunity for other employment to better himself and family, as he <br />so states, it is satisfactory with the Board that he make such a change. <br />However, his request for leave of absence is denied. <br />Vernon Lane, Building Commissioner, refers to the Board the matter of a house <br />move, from 122 W. Monroe Street, South Bend, out of the city. Mover to be <br />Lewis Mitschelen and owner is a Mr. Gooch. The proposed move would route the <br />house from Monroe t-o Main Street, Main Street to Jefferson Blvd., East to <br />Eddy Street, Eddy Street out of city. Since this route would move house over <br />Jefferson Street bridge, the matter was referred to the City Engineer to <br />ascertain strength of said bridge. The application was granted, subject to <br />final checking by the Building Commissioner to make certain the weight of <br />each wheel does not exceed one ton. <br />Comes now Vernon Lane, Building Commissioner, with progress report on condemna- <br />tion order for Portrait Home Builders, agents for the owner of a -dwelling at <br />802 N. Sherman Avenue, South Bend, Indiana. Mr. Lane reports that instructions <br />to bring property up to standard have not been complied with, a hearing called <br />for on July 119 1960 was ignored by owner or rOpresentative, said owner <br />having been previously notified of such hearing notwithstanding. <br />The Board now directs that condemnation proceedings be carried out. However, <br />prior to this the Building Commissioner is directed to take photographs of <br />dwelling, both in and out, to be filed as evidence if need arises. <br />Vernon Lane reppectfully requests permission for the following to attend a <br />meeting of Indiana Inspectors Association, Inc. in Evansville, Indiana on <br />August 19 21 and 3: Chief Plumbing Inspector, 1 Residential Inspector, <br />Commercial Inspector, Director of Division of Sub -Standard Buildings, and <br />for Mr. Lane, Building Commissioner.
