June 13, 1960 <br />A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held on Monday, June 13, 1960 <br />at 10:00'A.M. All members were present. Minutes of the previous regular meeting <br />were read and approved. Vouchers were approved and ordered paid to the various <br />suppliers. <br />The Board directed Chief of police J. Charles Dutrieux, Assistant Chief, Richard <br />Burkhart and Inspector James Trevey to attend the Indinana Chiefs of Police <br />Convention in Richmond, Indiana from June 19 to June 22, 1960. <br />Comes now, E.P. Stewart as agent for the owner, John C. Liebing, deceased, of the <br />real estate located at 503 Keasey Street. Mr. Stewart appeared at the request <br />of the Board to determine what action had been taken on substandard conditions <br />of this building. Since no action had been taken to date, Mr. Stewart was asked <br />why no progress had been made. Mr. Stewart submitted to the Board a copy of a <br />petition and order to be filed with the Probate Court asking permission to comply <br />with the Building Department's order for demolition of this building. Hearing on <br />this was continued for two weeks. <br />Comes now Alex Andrzejewski, Fire Chief, who informs the Board that the Firemen's <br />Pension Fund has approved the application of Michael A. Ruszkowski who resides at <br />1320 N. Fremont, for membership in the Firemen's Pension Fund. <br />The decision is governed by the recommendation of the medical examiner, whose <br />physical findings and the subsequent ability of the candidate to qualify in all <br />other prescribed entrance requirements are found satisfactory. The applicant, <br />having passed written examinations and met requirements, it is the decision of <br />the Board that Mr. Ruszkowski be appointed as a member of the South Bend Fire <br />Department, effective June 16, 1960. <br />A petition from Mr. Mayerhofer and others requesting a street light from 1700 S. <br />Scott to Dubail & Calvert was considered by the Board and referred to the <br />Electrical Department for investigation and report. <br />A letter from Mrs. Jeanne Dockery, Director of a Vacation Bible School, Gospel <br />Center Church was referred to the Board. Mrs. Dockery requested permission to <br />block two alleys - Nursery Court for one-half block between 30th and 31st Streets <br />and the alley running north and south between Mishawaka Avenue and Vine Street <br />for one-half block, - from June 13 to June 24, 1960 during Vacation Bible School <br />so as to protect the children attending the School. The, alleys to be blocked <br />between 8:30 A.M. to 11:30 A.M. Mrs. Dockery also requested a traffic officer <br />to help direct traffic during the time the children leave the School, from 11:15 A.M. <br />to 11:30 A.M. The Traffic Engineer was directed to take necessary steps in order <br />to grant, this request. <br />The monthly report for the month of May, 1960 from the Building Department was <br />examined and ordered placed on file. <br />Comes now Vernon Lane, Building Commissioner and informs the Board that they have <br />opened bids for the demolition of a building located at 257--259 N. Chicago Street. <br />The bidders were: B & 0 Wrecking Company, Ham the Wrecker, and Joe Ksiezopolski. <br />Mr. Lane requests the Board to approve the awarding of the bid to B & 0 Wrecking <br />Company for the sum of $175, this being the lowest and best bid. The Board,having <br />examined the bids approved the action of the Building Department in awarding <br />said bid. <br />Comes now Vernon Lane, Building Commissioner, and informs the Board that they have <br />opened bids for the demolition of a building located at 124 N. Adams St. The bidders <br />were: B & 0 Wrecking Company, Ham the Wrecker, and Joe Ksiezopolski. Mr. Lane <br />requests the Board to approve the awarding of the bid to Ham the Wrecker for the <br />sum of $3759 this being the lowest and best bid. The Board, having examined the <br />bids, approved the action of the Building Department in awarding the bid. <br />Comes now Vernon Lane, Buildlgg Commissioner and informs the Board of a request from <br />the Planning Commission of Lawrenceville, Illinois that the technical knowledge of <br />the Building Commissioner be utilized at a meeting in Lawrenceville, Illinois on <br />June 23, 1960. Permission is hereby granted for Mr. Lane to attend the meeting <br />as requested and to be absent from the Building Department for said date. Expenses <br />for said trip will be paid by the Building Commission. <br />A street Light Outage Report was submitted by the°Police' Departmegt, examined and <br />ordered placed on file. <br />
