Department of Public Parks
Administration Building
St. Louis Boulevard at Wayne Street
South Bend, Indiana 46617
PHONE: (219) 284 -9401
February 16, 1979
Mr. Roger Parent, President
South Bend Common Council
County -City Building
227 West Jefferson Boulevard
South Bend, Indiana
Dear Mr. Parent:
The Department of Public Parks is requesting the Common Council to approve
the enclosed resolution to file a grant application to the Institute of
Museums Services for Potawatomi Zoo.
The grant request, in the amount of $14,421.83, would be to hire a person,
purchase equipment and supplies to establish a program of graphics (transfer
information) either by sign or audio for the many animal species at the zoo.
One of the zoo's most important functions is education and unfortunately
the zoo has been weak on information about its animals the last few years.
Because of high construction costs, in the bond issue, money for graphics had
to be deleted.
The Park Board feels it is very important to identify each animal and give a
short resume of the characteristics of the animal. The Board is confident
that the city is going to have a fine zoo and feel an outstanding graphics
program is needed.
The Park Department's share of funding grant ($16,433.23) is already included
in the 1979 park budget, thus, no additional city funds will be needed if the
grant is approved.
Your approval of this resolution will be appreciated.
Very truly yours,
DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC PARKS
mes R. Seitz, ,
Superintendent
enclosure
