CITY of SOUTH
PETER J. NEMETH.
COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
Carl Ellison
Director
Jon R. Hunt
Deputy Director
V. LaMar Wilson
Assistant Director
J`l • D <10
BEND ''• 3:
rn
Mayor ?
ti
wy800 ,6 a
To: Members of the Common Council
From: Bonnie C. Strycker, Y.S.B.
Re: H.E.W. Grant Request
Date: April 3, 1979
1440 County -City Building
South Bend, Indiana 46601
219/284 -9335
The South Bend Youth Service Bureau is interested in again making
application to the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare for
continuation funding for the Youth Service Bureau operated Runaway
Shelter. We are requesting $52,500 in federal funds. This is the
same level as last year.
We will continue receiving a per diem of $14.for youth housed at
the Shelter who are wards of the St. Joseph County Department of Public
Welfare. As match for this grant is in the form of in -kind contributions,
several local social service agencies have indicated their willingness
to again provide consultation services to the staff and residents.
The Runaway Shelter has been in operation for nearly three years.
It has been a highly successful program and has demonstrated the need
for short -term crisis care in the South Bend area. All youth who are
housed at the shelter receive individual and group counseling. The
parents are contacted and in most cases a family worker visits the
parents to explain our program and expectations of them and their child.
At least one family meeting is held prior to the youth's return home.
For those families who are interested, family therapy is provided through
the Bureau or referral to another agency. Contact is maintained over a
period of time once the youth has left the shelter to insure against a
reoccurrence of the runaway episode.
I hope this adequately explains the shelter program and this
application. If you have questions or comments, please contact me.
Application on file in the City Clerk's office.
