QJ '
IV. Population Served (continued)
and meetings last year, attracting visitors from the community and out of town.
The area is served by a number of museums including the Art Center. Inc.,
(located in the same complex as Discovery Hall), Snite Gallery at Notre Dame, Northern
Indiana Historical Society and several county historical societies, yet Discovery
Hall's focus remains unique.
A number of special groups have an interest in Discovery Hall. The largest
of these is the Studebaker Driver's Club, an 8,000 member organization of Studebaker
car collectors from all over the country. This group has raised money for a re-
storation fund for the museum's Studebaker Historic Vehicle Collection.
Discovery Hall will soon become the repository for the records of the Michiana
Oral Labor History Project. This project, sponsored by the IUSB History Department
has been collecting Oral History on the union organizing process of the 1930's. In
August 1980, the project's final exhibit and public discussion sessions are scheduled
for Discovery Hall and a large part of the labor community is expected to participate.
Discovery Hall is becoming an important resource to the educational community.
School groups of all grades visit the museum in connection with their studies in
local history, American History, and Economics. In addition, the History Departments
from the local universities (St. Mary's College, Notre Dame and Indiana University -
South Bend) have used the museum. Discovery Hall also has had volunteers or student
interns from all three schools.
18
