December 7, 1964 <br />A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held on Monday, December <br />7, 1964 at 10:00 A-.M. All members were present. Minutes of the last. <br />regular meeting were read and approved. Vouchers were approved and <br />ordered paid to the various suppliers. <br />BUILDING DEPARTMENT SUB -STANDARD DIVISION ( HEARINGS <br />Comes now Mr. Richard Liszewski, Supervisor of the Sub -Standard Division <br />of the Building Department, and advises the Board that he had requested <br />Mrs. C. Wczewian to appear before the Board to show cause why her property <br />located at 1013-15 Western-Avenue,-ths•property consisting of two small <br />dwellings, had not been brought up to standard as directed. Both dwellings <br />are presently occupied. Orders were also issued to have property vacated <br />and, if not repaired dwellings were to be demolished within 30 days. <br />Mrs. C. Wczesien advised the Board that the tenants living in the dwellings <br />were very poor and could not afford to move. She also advised the Board <br />that she had made some repairs and intended to make other repairs when <br />weather conditions permitted. <br />After hearing Mrs. Wczewian, the Board directed that the property be <br />inspected and a report be made on what progress had been made on the <br />repairs. <br />This hearing was continued until December 14, 1964. <br />With reference to property owned by Mr. F. D. Cook, located at 506 S. <br />27th Street, Mr. Liszewski reported that Mr. Cook had been ordered to <br />appear to show cause why property had not been brought up to standard <br />and that he had failed to appear and had failed to complete repairs as <br />ordered. An old utility building had been removed, However. nothing <br />more had been done. <br />The Board granted a continuation of this hearing for one week to allow <br />time for Mr. Cook to appear before the Board. <br />REQUEST: SOUTH BEND JAYCEES ( PLACE PERMANENT SIGNS ON S= HIGHWAYS ) <br />A letter from 1.4r. James F. Kleyle of the South Bend Jaycees was submitted <br />to the Board. W . Kleyle requested permission for the Jaycees to place <br />permanent Welcome signs on U. S. Rt. 31 at city limits, U.S. Rt.'33 at <br />city limits and Ind. Rt. 2 at city limits and Lincoln Way East in the <br />1600 block by Redden Travel Bureau. <br />This request was discussed with the Traffic Engineer who advised the <br />Board that since these were State Highways, it was necessary to work <br />through the State Highway Commission. <br />Since the letter did not specify where the signs were -to be installed <br />and what appropriate civic message would be inscribed on the signs, the <br />Board directed that a letter be sent to Mr. Kleyle requested clarification <br />of the request and also requesting that he appear before the Board on <br />December 14, 1964 at the meeting of the Board to further discuss this <br />request. <br />REQUEST: SOLICIT FOR ADVERTISING ( IND, CIVIL DEFENDER ) <br />Mr. W. P. Ellis of the Indiana Civil Defender, the officiel magazine of <br />the Indiana Civil Defense Director's Association was granted permission <br />to solicit south bend business establishments for advertisements for the <br />magazine. <br />Mx. Ellis advised the Board that this request had been approved by the <br />Director of St. Joseph County --Civil Defense. <br />Solicitation will be allowed from December 7, 1964 through December 12,1964. <br />
