December 30, 1968 <br />A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works & Safety met at 10:00 A.M. on <br />December 30, 1968, with all members present. The minutes of the previous <br />meeting were reviewed and approved. <br />APPLICATIONS - FIRE DEPARTMENT <br />The application of Jerome Richard Swartz for appointment to the Fire Department <br />was received and referred to the Personnel Department for further processing. <br />APPLICATIONS - POLICE DEPARTMENT <br />The application of Jerry James Umsted for appointment to the South Bend <br />Police Department was received and referred to the Personnel Department for <br />further processing. <br />RETIREMENT FROM FIRE DEPARTMENT - THOMAS J. QUIRK (DISABILITY) <br />The application of Thomas J. Quirk for retirement from the Fire Department <br />effective January 1, 1969, on account of disability as the result of being <br />seriously burned in his home on December 25, 1967, together with medical <br />examiner's report was presented to the Board by Chief Zurat, and upon <br />motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, said disability retirement <br />was approved by the Board. <br />V <br />APPOINTMENTS - FIRE DEPARTMENT <br />Upon recommendation of Fire Chief Joseph L. Zurat, the following appointments <br />to the South Bend Fire Department :effectiJe:January 1, 1969, upon motion <br />made, seconded and unanimously carried, were approved by the Board: <br />James Donald Dowdy <br />Joseph O'Connor <br />Daniel S. O'Neill <br />Richard Paul Burnoski <br />REQUEST TO ATTEND ANTI -CRIME CONFERENCE - POLICE DEPARTMENT <br />Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the Board approved the request <br />of Chief Thomas McNaughton for Chief McNaughton and Uniform Division Chief <br />Glenn Terry to attend the Governor's Indiana Anti -Crime conference January 7 <br />and 8, 1969, in Indianapolis. <br />APPOINTMENT OF SPECIAL POLICE OFFICER - GENE DAVIS <br />Upon the recommendation of Chief of Police Thomas McNaughton, the Board <br />approved the.appointment of Gene Davis, Bendix employee, as a special police <br />officer. <br />APPOINTMENTS - POLICE DEPARTMENT <br />Upon motion made, seconded and carried, the Board approved the following <br />appointments to the South Bend Police Department, effective January 1, 1969: <br />Robert Lee Lanschweerdt <br />Cullen Walton, Jr. <br />AWARD OF CONTRACT FOR TRAFFIC SIGNALS <br />Upon the recommendatioh of the City Engineer, the Board awarded contract for <br />traffic signals at the following intersections: <br />1. Ireland and York <br />2, Ewing and Main <br />3. Ironwood and Pleasant <br />4. Olive and Washington <br />5. Portage, Angela and Diamond <br />to the Wellsbach Corporation, 445 N. Holmes Avenue, Indianapolis, Indiana, at <br />a total price of $41,015.95. <br />
