386 <br />December 9, 1968 <br />A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works and Safety met at 10:00 A.M. <br />on December 9, 1968, with Arthur W. Frisk and Lloyd S. Taylor present. The <br />minutes of the previous meeting were reviewed and approved. <br />APPLICATIONS - POLICE DEPARTMENT <br />The following applications for appointment to the South Bend Police Department <br />were filed with the Board and referred to the Personnel Director for further <br />processing -.,Richard Edwin Griffin, Wm. Stanley Nowostawski, Donn Michael <br />Singleton, and Ronald William Spencer. <br />REQUEST TO ATTEND "RE -SCHOOLING" AT SNORKEL FACTORY - FIRE DEPARTMENT <br />Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the Board approved the <br />request for Fire Chief Zurat and Master Mechanic Carl Martz to attend a <br />"re -schooling" at the snorkel factory, Kansas City, Missouri; December 10 to <br />12, 1968 in connection with the two snorkel units currently in service, the <br />expenses of which trip will be paid by the Midwest Fire and Safety Equipment <br />Company. <br />REQUEST TO ADVERTISE FOR BIDS - INSTALLATION OF TRAFFIC SIGNALS <br />Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the Board approved the re- <br />quest of the Traffic Engineering Department to advertise for bids for the installation <br />of traffic signals at the following intersections: <br />1. Ireland and York (semi -actuated) <br />2. Ewing and Main (fixed time) <br />3. Ironwood and Pleasant (fixed time) <br />4. Olive and Washington (fixed time) <br />5. Portage, Angela and Diamond (modernized, fixed time) <br />And the Clerk was directed to advertise in the South B end Tribune and the <br />Tri-County News on December 13 and December 20, 1968, for bids to be received <br />on December 23, 1968. - <br />REQUEST FOR STREET LIGHTS - OLIVE AND SAMPLE <br />A letter of request for street lights along Sample Street, from Olive and Sample <br />Street crossings to the Lombardy and Sample Street intersections, from Summit <br />Tooling Company, Division of Ace Tool Engineering Company, Inc., 2816 W. Sample <br />Street, was read. City Engineer Lloyd S. Taylor stated that a study is already <br />under way in this connection and his Department hopes to.accomplish some street <br />light installations in this area in the near future. <br />Walter E. Milovich, President and General Manager of Summit Tooling Company, in <br />his letter, also complains of trains blocking the Sample -Olive Street crossing <br />for excessive periods of time. <br />Upon motion made, seconded and carried, the above matters were referred to the <br />Engineering Department for study and recommendation. <br />PETITION FOR STREET LIGHT - LIBERTY BETWEEN HURON AND FORD STREETS <br />The petition of Leo Mrozinski, 513 S. Liberty Street, and 13 others for a street <br />light on Liberty Street, between Huron and Ford Streets, was filed with the <br />Board and referred to the Traffic Engineer for investigation and recommendation. <br />SPECIAL POLICE OFFICER'S BOND APPROVED - LEO A. VANDER HEYDEN <br />Continuation certificate continuing Bond No. 324 2375 on behalf of Special <br />Police Officer Leo A. Vander Heyder, Mishawaka, Indiana, employed by Associates <br />Investment Company, to 12/11/69 was approved byythe Board. <br />STREET LIGHT OUTAGE REPORTS <br />Street light outage reports for the period 11/24/68 to 12/6/68 were filed. <br />
