November 4, 1968. <br />A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works and Safety convened at 10:05 <br />A.M., with all members present. The minutes of the previous meeting were re- <br />viewed and approved. <br />RETIREMENT FROM POLICE DEPARTMENT - EDWARD STAN LEY SLABY <br />Chief Thomas McNaughton submitted the application for retirement of Edward <br />Stanley Slaby, Mr. Slaby having been appointed to the Police Department on <br />October 11, 1948, and having served more than 20 years. Upon motion made, <br />seconded and unanimously carried, the Board approved the retirement effective <br />October 31, 1968. <br />REQUEST FOR POLICE OFFICERS TO ATTEND INSTITUTE <br />Upon motion made, seconded and carried, the Board approved the request of <br />Police Chief Thomas McNaughton for Sergeants William Floring, Erwin Gerschoffer, <br />Arnold Bennett and Albert Poelvoorde to attend a course on the scientific <br />investigation of crime at the Southern Police Institute in Louisville, <br />Kentucky, January 6 to January 17, 1969. <br />STREET LIGHT REQUESTS <br />Petitions for street lights were filed with the Board as follows: <br />1124 E. Corby Street - by Cy J. Cesulka, 1120 E..Corby Street, and 13 others. <br />619 Sherman. Street - by Madge Urban, 623 Cushing Street, and 14 others. <br />Illinois Street, between Ford and Bella Vista - by Edward Gazler, 715 S. Illinois <br />and 26 others. <br />Hill Street, between Colfax and South Bend Avenue, <br />.South Bend Avenue, from Hill to Notre Dame, <br />Notre Dame Avenue, between South Bend Avenue and Angela Boulevard, filed by <br />Notre Dame University. <br />Upon motion made, seconded and carried, the petitions were referred to Traffic <br />Engineering for investigation and recommendation. <br />EMPLOYEES' SAFETY COMMITTEE <br />The Board directed that the following notice be sent to all Department Heads <br />concerning the Employees' Safety Committee: <br />"In recent discussions with Mr. William Wukovits, safety engineer for <br />Aetna Casualty and Surety Company it has been brought to.our attention <br />that a certain laxity in adherence to the safety program exists. <br />"For some unknown reason all of the Departments are not being repre- <br />sented at the monthly safety meetings held. You are reminded that <br />attendance at these meetings is mandatory not permissive, and the <br />chairman of the Safety Committee is Tieing directed to report absentees <br />to the Board of Public Works and Safety. <br />"At the July meeting, we are advised it was agreed upon that copies of <br />Departmental safety meeting minutes were to be forwarded to Mr. Wukovits. <br />To date only two such reports have been received.
