1 <br />September 23, 1968. <br />The regular meeting of the Board of Safety met at 10:00 A.M. on September <br />23, 1968. Present were James A. Bickel and Lloyd S. Taylor. Mr.'Bickel <br />acted as Chairman of the Board. <br />APPLICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT -F.rRE DEPARTMENT <br />The following applications for appointment to the Fire Department were <br />filed and referred to the Personnel Director for further processing <br />Patrick O'Connor <br />Richard Paul Wawrzyniak <br />APPLICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT - POLICE DEPARTMENT <br />The application of Darneil Lewis for appointment to the Police Department was <br />filed and referred to the Personnel Director .for further processing. <br />RETIREMENT - <br />FIRE CHIEF CECIL McHENRY <br />00 <br />The Board received <br />the application and <br />declaration for retirement of Fire <br />Chief Cecil <br />McHenry effective November <br />1, 1968, Chief McHenry having become <br />U <br />65 years of <br />age on September 9, 1968, <br />the age of mandatory retirement. Upon <br />motion made, <br />seconded and unanimously <br />carried, the Board appoved the retire- <br />ment of Chief <br />McHenry. <br />I.Q. TESTS FOR FIREMENIAND POLICEMEN <br />All applications for appointment to Fire Department and Police Department <br />will be reviewed by the Board. <br />REQUEST OF RIETH RILEY CONSTRUCTION CO., INC. TO BURN TREES AND BRUSH <br />The request of Rieth-Riley Construction Co., Inc., dated September 12, 1968, <br />for permissi-on to burn trees and brush which will be cleared in conjunction <br />with the construction of the new Cleveland Road Bridge over the St. Joseph <br />River, in the vicinity of Riverside Drive, was, on motion made, seconded <br />and unanimously carried, approved by the Board, upons Qa on the recommendation <br />of the Fire Department that the following conditions be complied with: <br />1. That a bulldozer and operator be available on the site <br />during the burning operation. <br />2. That full water tanker be kept on the site with hose <br />lines to reach fire in case of emergency. <br />3. That the fire is put out at the end of each working day. <br />STREET LIGHT REQUESTS <br />1. Request of Crest Manor Development Corp, 60124 Miami Road, South <br />Bend, Indiana, for the installation of street lights in Crest <br />Manor, Sections 4, 8 and 9; <br />for the instalation of street lighting in Fairfax Estates, <br />Sections 1 and Ireland Heights. <br />2. The request of Joseph Chrzan and 28 others for the installation <br />of street lights on Phillipa Street from Ford -,'to Dunham. <br />3. Petition of Julius Horvath and 21 others for the installation <br />of a street light on Illinois Street, between Ford and Huron. <br />4. Petition of Frank Rozmann and six others for a street light <br />at Hillside and Phillipa Streets. <br />The above petitions and requests were ordered file and referred to the <br />Traffic Engineering Department for investigation and recommendation. <br />
