September 16, 1968 <br />A regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety convened at 10:00 A.M. with members <br />Lloyd S. Taylor and Arthur W. Frisk, present. The minutes of the two previous meet- <br />ings were reviewed and approved. <br />FIRE DEPARTMENT <br />Reguest to Attend State Fire Academy Colpmbvs,, Indiana <br />Upon motion made, seconded and carried, the Board approved the request of Chief McHenry <br />for Lieutenant Carl Lederer to attend the State Fire Academy meeting in Columbus, <br />Indiana on Tuesday, September 24, 1968. <br />Retirement from Fire -Department - JAMES A. HUNPBREY <br />Upon the recommendation of Chief of Fire Department Cecil C. McHenry, upon motion made, <br />seconded and carried, the Board approved the retirement of Fireman James A. Humphrey, <br />effective September 13, 1968, and having served more than twenty years, <br />Application for &jointment to Fire DepartmentJ S D DOWDY <br />�• The application of James D. Dowdy for appointment to the Fire Department was filed by <br />the Board and referred to the Personnel Director for processing. <br />00 <br />Request of Urban Redevelopment to Burn Structures Scheduled For Demolition <br />V Upon motion made, seconded and carried, the request of Urban Redevelopment for the Fire <br />Department to burn structures scheduled for demolition in the Industrial Expansion pro- <br />gram, project area Ind• R-56 was approved by the Board. <br />Request for Permission to Burn Brush and Undergrowth in Cleveland Road Bridge Area <br />The request of RIETH-RILEY for permission to burn undergrowth and brush near the Cleve- <br />land Road Bridge was received and filed and referred to Fire Prevention Bureau of the <br />Fire Department for study and recommendations to be given at the Board's next meet- <br />ing September 23, 1968. <br />Request for Permission to Burn Undergrowth on Lot at Jefferson & Ed FIRST <br />CHRISTIAN CHURCH <br />The request of the Maintenance Supt. of the church, Mr. Hill, 320 S. Main Street on <br />behalf of the First Christian Church, to burn shrubbery, etc., on the church lot at <br />Jefferson and Eddy streets was denied upon the recommendation of the Fire Prevention <br />Bureau as it is too close to other structures. Chief Wm. Diedrich of the Bureau is <br />to communicate the Board's decision to Mr. Hill. <br />Inspector Terry reported there is already a police officer on duty in the City Court <br />and the officer assigned to the street patrol and stationed on the corner of LaSalle <br />and Michigan is also responsible. His report was received and filed by the Board <br />upon his statement that these two officers should be sufficient and any disturbance <br />should be called to their attention and any neglect of duty on part of these officers <br />should be reported to him. <br />Application for appointment as Special Police Officer - STEVE OLAWSKI, LOUIS H. WILLIAMS <br />and JOHN KEY <br />The applications for appointment as special police officer of Steve Olawski for St. <br />Joseph Hospital, South Bend, Louis H. Williams for the Bendix Corporation and John <br />Key, also for the Bendix Corporation were approved by the Board. <br />Continuation Certificate issued by Western Surety on behalf of Russell A. Jester, <br />Special Police Officer to continue his bond to October, 1969. <br />Appointments to Police Department - THEODORE C. NAJDEK+ JR. <br />Upon the recommendation of Chief of Police Thomas H. McNaughton and Assistant Chief <br />Loren Bussert and due investigation by the Board, the appointment of Theodore C. <br />Najdek, Jr. Was made to the department, effective September 16, 1968. <br />
