35311 <br />August 12, 1968 <br />A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works and Safety met at 10:00 A.M. <br />on August 12, 1968, with all members present. The minutes of the previous <br />meeting were reviewed and approved. <br />APPLICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT TO POLICE DEPARTMENT <br />The following applications for appointment to the South <br />Bend Police Depart- <br />ment were filed -with the Board and referred to the Personnel Director -for <br />further processing: <br />Harold Richard Bucher <br />Louis Nemeth, Jr. <br />REQUEST TO ATTEND LIE DETECTION SCHOOL - SGTS. NIEZGODSKI & LOUIS KUJAWSKI <br />The request of Police Chief Thomas McNaughton for Sergeants Donald Niezgodski <br />and Louis Kujawski to. attend„the Backster School of Lie <br />Detection in New <br />York City --for a six weeks period, from January 13, 1969 <br />through February 22, <br />1969'; at a cost of approximately $1250.00 per man, was, <br />upon motion made, <br />tr <br />seconded and carried, approved by the Board, subject to <br />a sufficient sum <br />of money being appropriated in the 1969 budget for such <br />attendance. <br />00 <br />APPLICATION FOR APPOINTMENT AS SPECIAL POLICE OFFICER <br />- MARVIN J. HEGGINS <br />The Application of Marvin J. Heggins for appointment as <br />a special police <br />officer was approved by the Board. <br />RESIGNATION OF E. R. DECRAENE FROM POLICE DEPARTMENT <br />T,he resignation of officer E. R. DeCraene #169 effective September 1, 1968, <br />was tendered by Police Chief Thomas McNaughton and, upon motion made, <br />seconded and unanimously carried, was accepted and approved by the Board. <br />RETIREMENT FROM POLICE DEPARTMENT - ANTHONY G. IGAZ <br />The application of officer Anthony G. Igaz for retirement from the South <br />Bend Police Department was presented to the Board by Chief of Police <br />Thomas McNaughton and, upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, <br />was accepted and approved by the Board, effective August 18, 1968. And <br />notice of application filed with the Police Pension Fund was received and <br />filed. <br />RECOMMENDATION OF CITY ENGINEER RE PETITION FOR STREET LIGHT IMPROVEMENT <br />IN`TME AREA OF BIRDSELL, WILBER, FA'BSNACHT, SIBLEY, FLORENCE h LONGLEY <br />The City Engineer reports a detailed study has been made by the Engineering <br />Department of the lighting in the area of Birdsell, Wilber, Fassnacht, <br />Sibley, Florence and.Longley Streets, and makes the following recommendation: <br />"Conversion from 4000 lumen incandescent to 7000 lumen mercury <br />vapors plus the addition of several lights. <br />"The lighting in this general area could be vastly improved <br />if the trees were trimmed. Therefore, we have requested the <br />Park Department to trim the trees. We feel that this will <br />greatly improve the existing situation. <br />"There is not sufficient funds available in the 1968 budget <br />to add the additional lights requested, but this can be con- <br />sidered in 1969.11 <br />STREET LIGHT REMOVAL - W. CHIPPEWA AVENUE (KAISER JEEP) <br />Upon motion made, seconded and carried, the Board approved the recommendation <br />of the Traffic Engineer for the removal of the present 20,000 lumen unit <br />mounted on a pole (V-304-153) in view of the fact that Kaiser Jeep <br />Corporation is improving the entrance to its plant by redesigning it, and <br />a sign with a 50,000 lumen unit will be installed in a traffic island. <br />
