<br />A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works and Safety convened at
<br />10:00 A.M. on March 3, 1969, with all members present. The minutes of
<br />the last two meetings were reviewed and approved.
<br />APPLICATION FOR APPOINTMENT - FIRE DEPARTMENT
<br />The application of Leonard Joseph Saniak for appointment to the South Bend
<br />Fire Department was filed with the Board and referred to the Personnel.
<br />Director for further processing.
<br />RETIREMENTS - FIRE DEPARTMENT
<br />Fire Chief Joseph L. Zurat submitted the declarations for retirement and
<br />applications for pension fund benefits of the following firemen:
<br />Steve N. Harsanyi - effective March 1, 1969, having been
<br />appointed March 1, 1949, and having completed 20 years of service.
<br />Harold G. Waechter - effective March 1, 1969, having been
<br />appointed March 1,1949, and having completed 20 years of service.
<br />Approved by the Board, upon motion made, seconded and carried,
<br />RETIREMENT - POLICE DEPARTMENT
<br />Chief of Police Thomas H. McNaughton submitted the declaration for retire-
<br />ment and application for pension fund benefits of Glenn W. Zubler,
<br />effective February 28, 1969,having been appointed March 1, 1949, and
<br />having completed 20 years of service.
<br />Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, said application and
<br />declaration was approved by othe Board.
<br />BUILDING DEPARTMENT - SUB -STANDARDS DIVISION
<br />Mr. J. W. Adamson, Sub -Standards Director, appeared before the Board and
<br />the following matters were taken up:
<br />1820 S. Taylor Street. Mr. Adamson stated this property is open, exposed,
<br />in a dangerous condition and sub -standard since 1966. Attorney Leon
<br />Kowalski appeared before the Board on behalf of the owner, Mrs. Alex
<br />Zakorowski, who was also present. Four months additional time was requested
<br />in which to complete repairs to the building. Mrs. Rakorowski stated the
<br />owners would do as much of the repairs themselves as they could and hire
<br />a contractor to complete the job. Mr. Kowalski stated he could not dispute
<br />the condition of the building; he was appearing for Mrs. Zakorowski to
<br />ask that the Board extend her enough time in which to make the repairs.
<br />Upon motion made, seconded and carried, the matter was continued until March
<br />10, 1969, for the owner to secure the building so that children cannot get
<br />into it, and to clean up the yard of debris and trash.
<br />414 E. Pennsylvania Street. Wendell Hartman, Elkhart, Indiana,-
<br />contract
<br />buyer of this property, appeared before the Board, and stated that he
<br />purchased the house last September as an investment, intending to repair
<br />it for sale; that he at that time nailed it up, but vandals had broken in`
<br />and it was difficult to keep it secured; that he, his father and his ,�
<br />brother are in the= -construction business; that this house is structurewy
<br />sound and as soon as the weather permits he will renovate it for sale.
<br />Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the matter was continued
<br />until March 10, 1969, to afford Mr. Hartman an opprotunity to secure the
<br />building and clear the yard of debris and trash.
<br />1127`Campeau Str..eet.,:-,�e'. Jerry Davis, owner of this property, appeared
<br />before the Board. Mr. Davis offered reasons for not having complied with
<br />the order of the Board.
<br />Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, permission was granted
<br />to advertise for bids for demolition of the property.
