Tuesday, <br />February 16, 1971 <br />A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works and Safety convened at 9:30 <br />A.M. on Tuesday, February 16, 1971, with all members present. <br />POLICE DEPARTMENT - REQUEST TO ATTEND CONFERENCE IN ELMIRA. NEW YORK <br />Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the Board granted <br />permission, upon the recommendation of Chief of Police Loren M. Bussert, <br />for Sergeants Bruce Stickley and Daniel Martin, of the Community Re- <br />lations and Juvenile Division, to attehd the national conference of <br />Christians and Jews Workshop on the Scranton Commission Report on Student <br />Unrest from February 21 to 26, 1971, and to use a Police Department <br />vehicle for transportation. <br />APPOINTMENT TO POLICE DEPARTMENT - JOHN JOSEPH BLILEY <br />Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the Board approved <br />the appointment of John Joseph Bliley to the South Bend Police Department <br />effective February 16, 1971. <br />RESIGNATION FROM POLICE DEPARTMENT - FREO )OS€P,H QANTERT <br />Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the Board accepted <br />and approved the resignation of Fred Joseph Gantert from the South Bend <br />Police Department effective February 16, 1971. <br />POLICE DEPARTMENT - TRAFFIC REPORT FOR JANUARY, 1971 <br />The traffic report of the Police Department for January, 1971, was reviewed <br />and ordered filed. <br />FIRE DEPARTMENT - RETIREMENT OF ROBERT BANACH <br />Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the Board approved <br />the disability retirement of Robert Banach from the South Bend Fire De- <br />partment effective February 20, 1971, upon the recommendation of Fire <br />Chief Joseph L. Zurat. <br />REQUEST TO ADVERTISE FOR BIDS FOR STREET MATERIALS FOR STREET DEPARTMENT <br />Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the Board approved the <br />request of the Street Commissioner for permission to advertise for bids <br />for the following street materials: <br />Item #1 - 7,500 tons hot asphaltic concrete <br />Item #2 - 14,000 tons limestone or slag aggregate <br />Item #3 - 500,000 gallons emulsified asphalt <br />Item #4 - 30,000 gallons tack and prime coat <br />Item #5 - 200,000 gallons dust control oil <br />Item #6 - 25,000 tons various gravels and ice control sand <br />Item #7 - 450 tons street patching material <br />Item #8 - 250 cu. yds. ready mix concrete (Class A) <br />100 cu. yds. ready mix concrete (Class B) <br />March 8, 1971, was set as the date for receiving bids, and the Clerk was <br />directed to give notice by publication in the South Bend Tribune and the Tri- <br />County News on February 19 and February)26, 1971. <br />CONTRACT AWARDED FOR SLURRY SEAL MACHINES FOR STREET DEPARTMENT <br />Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, contract was awarded to <br />Slurry Seal, Inc., of'Waco, Texas, for two slurry seal machines upon their <br />bid January 11, 1971, in the amount of $19,990.00 net. <br />CONTRACT AWARDED - STEP VAN TRUCK FOR FIRE DEPARTMENT <br />Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, contract was awarded to <br />Gates Chevrolet:Corpocatiori.forra.:1971 Chevrolet Step Van Truck upon their <br />bid of $4,370.00 February 8, 1971, and optional equipment consisting of <br />siren, red lights and speakers for siren and radio in the amount of $625.00, <br />for the Fire Department. <br />
