January 25, 1971 <br />A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works and Safety convened at 9:33 <br />A.M., on January 25, 1971, with all members present. The minutes of the <br />previous meeting were reviewed and approved. <br />FIRE DEPARTMENT - APPLICATIONS <br />The following applications for appointment to the South Bend Fire Department <br />were filed with the Board and referred to the Personnel Director for further <br />processing: <br />Peter Allen Papo i <br />Jerry Dennis Stults <br />Michael Allan Vrabel <br />POLICE DEPARTMENT - APPLICATION <br />The application of Ronald Lee Jackson for appointment to the South Bend Police <br />Department was filed with the Board and referred to the Personnel Director <br />for further processing. <br />POLICE DEPARTMENT - PROMOTION <br />Upon the recommendation of Chief of Police Loren M. Bussert, the motion was <br />made, seconded and carried to promote Corporal Joseph Radecki'to the rank of <br />sergeant effective January 25, 1971. <br />POLICE DEPARTMENT - REQUEST TO ATTEND MEETING, DETROIT, MICHIGAN <br />Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the Board approved the <br />request of Chief of Police Loren M. Bussert for Division Chief Glenn Terry, <br />Captain Gerald Knepper and Sergeant Norman Collmer to attend a teleprocessing <br />course in Detroit, Michigan, January 25-27, 1971, and approved the use of <br />mechanical unit #5 for the trip. <br />WEIGHTS AND MEASURES DEPARTMENT - REQUEST TO ATTEND TECHNICAL SCHOOL <br />Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the Board approved the <br />request_ of Bert S. Cichowicz, City Sealer, to attend the Weights and Measures <br />Technical School in Indianapolis, Indiana January 27-29, 1971, <br />BUILDING DEPARTMENT - SUB -STANDARDS DIVISION <br />Richard Liszewski, Sub -Standards Director, appeared before the Board and the <br />following matters were taken up: <br />1613 S. Leer Street. The Sub -Standards Director reported the house at 1613 <br />S. Leer Street, owned by Mrs. Lottie King, unoccupied and open, and that junk <br />still remains in the yard. Upon motion made, seconded and carried, the matter <br />was further continued two weeks, and the Sub -Standards Director was requested <br />to write the owner that unless the debris is removed and the premises closed <br />by February 8, 1971, the Board will order the property demolished. <br />2116 W. Western. The Sub -Standards Director reported the owner has secured <br />the building at 2116 W. Western Avenue. Thereupon, the Clerk of the Board <br />was directed to deliver to the Midwest Demolition Company the $25.00 deposited <br />for the benefit of the low bidder August 31, 1970, in the event the demolition <br />contract was not awarded. The Sub -Standards Director was requested to have <br />the demolition contract voided, and, upon motion made, seconded and carried, <br />the matter of 2116 W. Western Avenue was continued indefinitely, to be kept <br />under surveillance of the Sub -Standards Department. <br />Jerry Davis, demolition contractor, who appeared before the Board and stated <br />that his bond has been cancelled and he is unable to obtain a bond, was ad- <br />vised by the Board that when the sidewalk at 715 S. Michigan Street, which <br />was damaged as the result of demolition of the premises at this address, <br />has been repaired and paid for, the City will so advise his insurance company. <br />
