2 e ) .:-. <br />March 9, 1972 <br />A Special Meeting of the -Board of Public Works and Safety was held on <br />Thursday, March 5- 1972, with the following members present: Charles <br />A. Sweeney, Jr.`, City Attorney, James Barcome. City Controller and <br />William Richardson, City Engineer. Mr. Sweeney acted as Chairman <br />of the meeting. The meeting was convened at 9:30 A.M. <br />Also present were Patrolman Maurice Van Woods and his Attorney, John <br />Roper! Chief of Police Robert Seats; witnesses to be called and <br />approximately twenty other persons. <br />Mr. Sweeney stated that the meeting was called for the purpose of hearing <br />evidence on Counts 1, 11, III and IV of the charges filed against <br />Patrolman Maurice Van Woods by Chief of Police Robert Seals on February <br />4, 1972, for violations of Sections 1.4, 1,8,, 4.2.,and 4.50 of, the <br />Rules and Regulations of the Police Department of --the City of South <br />Bend as contained in the Duty Manual. <br />Lewis Loderer and Robert Parker conducted the examination of the <br />witnesses Taffy Mallard and Allen Howell, who testified under oath <br />concerning the incident on January 26, 1972 at S'. S. Kresge, 201 <br />South Michigan Street, resulting in charges filed against Patrolman <br />Maudice Van Woods. <br />w <br />U The defendant, by his attorney John J. Rooer, called witnesses to <br />testify as eo'the occurence. Attorney Roper called as witnesses <br />Edward M. Scott of the South Bend Police Department Charles Howell, <br />father of the witness Atlen Howell; for preliminary background data <br />reference the character of the 'accused, the witness Allen Howell. <br />Keith Newbili of 637 E. Bronson Street and Thorn Lewis of South <br />Bend testified as to part of the occurence at the S. S. Kresge <br />store. <br />The defendant, Maurice Woods, testified in his own behalf and was <br />cross examined by counsel for the City. The accused additionally <br />called Sergeant Dan Thompson as well as Police Chief Robert Seals <br />and Sergeant Edward Scott. <br />The testimony being concluded, Mr. Sweeney announced that the <br />matter would be taken under advisement, and the meeting adjourned <br />at 8.15 P.M. <br />ATTEST: <br />J <br />Clerk <br />
