8/2/71 <br />TOPICS PROGRAM - UTILITIES AGREEMENTS - INDIANA MICHIGAN ELECTRIC COMPANY <br />The motion was made that the Board of Public Works and Safety enter into <br />agreements with the Indiana and Michigan Electric Company for electric lines <br />at the following intersections being constructed under the TOPICS (Traffic Operations <br />Program for increasing Capacity and Safety) program: <br />Corby-ironwood-Rockne <br />Lincolnway West -Williams <br />Portage -Elwood <br />Twyckenham-Ewing <br />The motion was seconded and carried, and the agreements executed -by the Board. <br />REQUEST FOR "PULL -OVER LANE" APPROVED - AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY <br />Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, upon the recommendation <br />of the Traffic Engineering Department, the Board approved the request of the <br />American Cancer Society for• a "pull -over lane" for -the purpose of soliciting <br />donations from motorists for the American Cancer Society, to use the curb <br />parking lane only and not to interfere with normal traffic lanes on Miami <br />Street, 3400-3500 blocks or on North Ironwood, 500-600 blocks. <br />COMMUNICATION - C. E. McCANN <br />A letter from C. E. McCann, 1816 S. Michigan Street, South Bend, Indiana, <br />inquiring if the old Fire Station #10 at 1820 S. Michigan Street was for sale <br />was read and ordered filed. <br />INDIANA BELL TELEPHONE CONSTRUCTION SITE - ADDITIONAL PARKING METER REMOVED <br />Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the Board approved the <br />recommendation -of the Traffic Engineering Department for the removal of an <br />additional parking meter on the west side of the 300 block of S. Main Street <br />during construction work at the Indiana Bell Telephone Company. <br />TRAFFIC REGULATION - CHAPIN STREET <br />"No parking" signs between the hours of 6:00 P.M. and 6:00 A.M. on the west <br />side of Chapin Street, from Washington to Western, having been removed by <br />the Traffic Engineering Department as directed, further action in reference <br />thereto was deferred for four weeks. <br />STREET LIGHTING APPROVED - MIAMI HILLS <br />Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the Board approved the <br />recommendation of the Traffic Engineering Department for the installation of <br />five 7,000L MV UG lights in the Miami Hills area at a cost of $32.50 per month. <br />CONTRACTORS' BONDS APPROVED <br />The following contractors' bonds were approved and ordered filed: <br />Harry S. Ruszkowski, Jr. - commencing 7/29/71 <br />Derso Horvath - commencing 7/20/71 <br />EXCAVATION BOND <br />Certificate continuing excavation bond of Herman F. Glaser Construction Company <br />to 7/27/72. <br />Mrs. David Whitmer, 1905 Chapin Street, South Bend, Indiana, attended the <br />meeting and inquired further regarding housing inspections being made by the <br />Sub -Standards Department . <br />Mrs. Lee Swan, 2022 E. Swygart Street, South Bend, Indiana, attended the meeting <br />and inquired if there is a policy whereby the Sanitation Department cleans up <br />private property. It was explained that there are four "flying squads" consist- <br />ing of a driver and three young people hired for summer work, working out of <br />the Sanitation Department, cleating up some of the vacant lots where the owner <br />cannot be found and various other places where people have dumped trash. <br />
