WELLS RE: ANGELA CURVE AT LAFAYETTE
The Board received the following memo:
April 18, 1973
To: oard of Public Works
From: Bureau of Administration & Design, David A. Wells, Manager
Subject: Angela Curve at Lafayette
Per your request to investigate the problem of vehicles missing the
curve at the subject location, we have investigated the problem and
have prepared some cost estimates.
It is our professional opinion that a guard rail or curb barrier must
be continuous around the curve. This would deny the property owner
access to this property from Angela Boulevard but with some effort on
the property owner's part, access is available from the alley north
of the affected property. The reason for the continuous barrier is so
that an out -of -control vehicle which is sliding along the barrier does
not suddenly+ encounter an opening in the barrier, slide out and strike
a fixed barrier head-on. At the present: time, fixed barriers on roads
and highways are being redesigned. Therefore, it is our opinion that
to knowingly design an unnecessary hazard is not in the public interest,
health or safety.
We estimate the cost of a concrete restraining curb at $1,300.00 and a
highway type guard rail at $2,400.00.
We hope this satisfied your request.
s/ David A. Wells, P.E.
