Broden (late) <br />Committee Members Absent: Gavin Ferlic <br />Others Present: City Clerk Kareemah Fowler, Jennifer Coffinan, Kathleen <br />Cekanski - Farrand, Adriana Rodriguez, John Murphy <br />Agenda: 2017 City -Wide Budget Overview <br />Administration <br />Innovation/Technology <br />Committee Chair Karen White called the meeting to order at 5:00 p.m. She thanked the <br />Administration and explained the importance of the budget to the City as a whole. <br />Committee Chair White asked the Councilmembers to jot down questions as the departments <br />make their presentations, and stated that the meetings go no longer than 7:00 p.m. Only one (1) <br />off -site budget meeting is planned so far. <br />2017 City -Wide Budget Overview <br />Mayor Pete Buttigieg thanked everyone involved in the budget process. <br />South Bend is growing and we're in a healthy place in terms of finances. We continue to have a <br />double -A bond rating, which is true of only a handful of communities around the State of <br />Indiana, most of them wealthy Indianapolis suburbs, except us. That is a credit to a lot of <br />groundwork of the Council and the Administration making tough choices and making sure we <br />have healthy cash reserves so that if there is a recession or an unexpected economic shock, we <br />would be in a position to avoid problems. <br />The other most important aspect of the 2017 budget is the fiscal challenges that we have. Tax <br />revenues are not growing very quickly. We are mostly reliant on property taxes, there is always <br />455 County -City Building • 227 W.
