45
1
1
1
REGULAR MEETING MARCH 7, 1983
FILING OF STREET LIGHT OUTAGE REPORT
The report submitted to the Board indicated a total of
thirteen (13) outages for the period February 11, 1983
to February 25, 1983. Upon a motion made by Mr.
Leszczynski, seconded by Mr. Hill and carried, the report
was filed.
APPROVE CLAIMS
Mr. Elroy J. Kelzenberg, Director of the Michiana Area CETA
Consortium, submitted a report indicating purchase orders
totalling forty-eight (48) to be paid. Chief Deputy Controller
Sherrie L. Petz, submitted Claim Docket No. 3794 through No.
4887 and recommended approval. Upon a motion made by Mr.
Leszczynski, seconded by Mr. Hill and carried, the reports
were filed and the claims approved.
COUNCILMEN VOORDE AND SZYMKOWIAK - QUESTIONS RE:
COMBINED COMMUNICATIONS CENTER
Councilman John Voorde, 817 West North Shore Drive, appeared
before the Board and asked whether or not consideration was
given to computerizing the combined Police/Fire communication
center. Mr. Leszczynski advised him that it was considered
but the cost factor (approximately $100,000 to $250,000) was
too prohibitive at this time. However, the communications
center was designed to be able to accomodate a computerized
system should it become necessary in the future. Mr.
Leszczynski stated that this estimate was based on what
other municipalities had been informed when looking into
this possibility. He further stated that the specifications
for the combined communication center were written so that
the consoles installed would have the ability to be converted
at a later date to accept computers.
Mr. Voorde also inquired if the City had looked into the
possibility of combining the communication center with
Mishawaka and the County and if a dollar study on this
matter was done. Mr. Leszczynski advised him that no study
per se has been conducted but the City's first objective
was to combine our communication center and get it functioning
properly before trying to combine with other agencies. Mr.
Voorde mentioned that some questions that would need to be
answered in the case of a combined county -wide dispatch system
would be who would man the center and who would pay for the
cost. It was noted that the present location of the combined
communications center has benefits such as expansion capability
and security and the City will look at a combined county -wide
communication system in the future.
Councilman Walter M. Szymkowiak, 719 North Johnson Street
echoed the sentiments of Councilman Voorde and additionally
mentioned that it would be a wise move to expand into a
larger space so that the center would be ready to go when
and if the City combines with Mishawaka and the County in a
communications center. He stated that the cost factor would
be less now than it would be in the future.
There being no further business
motion made by Mr. Leszczynski,
to come before the Board, upon a
seconded by Mr. Hill and carried,
