<br />APPROVE REQUEST OF KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS TO CONDUCT
<br />INTERSECTION SOLICITATION (MAY 11, 12'& 13, 1984)
<br />In a letter to the Board, Mr. Richard VanOverberghe, President,
<br />St. Joseph Valley Chapter, Knights of Columbus, 315 North Michigan
<br />Street, South Bend, Indiana, requested permission to solicit
<br />donations for the mentally retarded of our community. He
<br />advised that this project is known as the Annual Tootsie Roll
<br />Campaign and he is requesting permission to solicit at the
<br />following intersections on May 11, 12 & 13, 1984 from 9:00 a.m.
<br />to 5:00 p.m. and in '.the evening on May 11, 1984:
<br />1. Corner of Wayne and Main Streets
<br />2. Corner of Main and Washington
<br />3. Corner of Monroe and Michigan Streets
<br />4. Corner of Main and Jefferson
<br />Mr. Leszczynski advised that Mr. Ralph J. Wadzinski, Manager, Bureau
<br />of Traffic and Lighting, has reviewed this request and recommends
<br />approval.It was noted that solicitations are to take place on
<br />the sidewalks only. Upon a.motion made by Mr. Leszczynski, seconded
<br />by Mr. Hill and carried, Mr. Wadzinski's recommendation was accepted
<br />and the request approved, and upon the recommendation of Mr. Hill,
<br />the Clerk was instructed to forward to the Knights of Columbus a
<br />copy of the Board of Public Works Policy on fund solicitations at
<br />intersections.
<br />APPROVE REQUEST OF CITY AWNING OF SOUTH BEND TO ERECT
<br />ENTRANCE CANOPY AT VALLEY AMERICAN BUILDING, PDH
<br />PRODUCTS. MAIN STREET ENTRANCE
<br />Mr. Leszczynski advised that Mr. Ralph J. Wadzinski, Manager,
<br />Bureau of Traffic and Lighting, and Mr. Paul L. Roelke, Building
<br />Commissioner, have reviewed the request of Mr. Robert L. Hinsch,
<br />Sales Manager, City Awning of South Bend, to erect an entrance
<br />canopy submitted to the Board on April 30, 1984 and offer the
<br />following recommendations.
<br />Mr. Wadzinski recommends approval subject to the edge of the
<br />canopy being 2'-0' minimum from the face of curb and approval of
<br />the erection by the Indiana Department of Highways.
<br />Mr. Roelke indicated that he has reviewed the request and sketch
<br />and stated that regulations on this subject are set forth in
<br />Chapter #34 of the Uniform Building Code. He stated that this
<br />application is similar to a marquee, that is self supporting and
<br />therefore, he has applied the Code for a marquee which is that
<br />an eight (8) foot high -supporting frame canopy can cover only
<br />two-thirds (2/3) the distance from the property line to the curb
<br />line. A marquee projecting more than two-thirds (2/3) the
<br />distance from the property line to curb line shall be twelve
<br />(12) feet above the sidewalk grade and must be two (2) foot
<br />from the curb line Therefore, the erection of the entrance
<br />canopy must comply with these regulations.
<br />Based on the information provided, upon a motion made by Mr.
<br />Leszczynski, seconded by Mr. Hill and carried, the request of
<br />City Awning was approved subject to their strict compliance with
<br />the Code As mentioned above and approval by the Indiana Depart-
<br />ment of Highways.
<br />APPROVE ELECTION DAY PARKING RESTRICTIONS
<br />In response to a letter to --the Board from Thomas P. Sheridan,
<br />Campaign Director, Mondale for President, Campaign Headquarters,
<br />137 North Michigan Street, South Bend, Indiana, to approve park-
<br />ing in front of headquarters, and the south side of Colfax Avenue,
<br />Mr. Ralph J. Wadzinski, Manager, Bureau of Traffic and Lighting,
<br />recommends the following:
