ORDINANCE NO. <br />BILL NO. 57 -16 <br />AN ORDINANCE OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF <br />SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, SETTING THE ANNUAL SALARY FOR THE SOUTH BEND <br />CITY CLERK FOR CALENDAR YEAR 2017 <br />STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND INTENT <br />The City Clerk serves as the clerk to legislative body pursuant to Indiana Code § 36 -4 -6 -9 and is <br />required to preserve the legislative body's records and proceedings. The City Clerk is also charged <br />with keeping the City Seal, administering official oaths, attending all regular and special meetings <br />of the Common Council, and performing other duties as may be required by the legislative body. <br />Indiana Code § 36- 4 -11 -4 authorizes the City Clerk to appoint the "number of deputies and <br />employees authorized by the city legislative body ", which are established by a separate ordinance. <br />The City Clerk currently manages a staff of four (4) employees, which includes overseeing the <br />Ordinance Violations Bureau. <br />The South Bend Common Council is required to fix the annual compensation of all elected city <br />officers pursuant to Indiana Code § 36- 4 -7 -2. <br />Section I. The maximum salary for the City Clerk for the 2017 calendar years shall be established <br />as follows: <br />2016 <br />$ 59,466 <br />2017 <br />$73,000 <br />Section II. This ordinance shall be in full force and effect from and after its passage by the <br />Common Council, approval by the Mayor and legal publication. <br />Tim Scott, Council President <br />South Bend Common Council <br />
