North Shore Dr., Howard St. & Niles Ave. Intersection Multi -Way STOP Warrant Analysis Summary (TR16-103) DATE: September 15, 2016 Purpose & Need During the construction of the roundabouts on N. Michigan St., (part of the Smart Streets project) which resulted in very significant traffic detours, a multi -way stop was installed at the intersection of Howard St. and Niles Ave. to mitigate the increased traffic volumes, much of which was also new to the area, and therefore the potential increase in collisions. During this time the Engineering Department received numerous requests to consider leaving the multi -way stop in place after the construction detours were to be removed. The Engineering Department requested one of the Smart Streets project consultants to prepare a warrant study for making the multi -way stop permanent. This summary memo includes the results of the analysis and the proposed recommendation. Location The intersection is located northeast of the central business district; its general configuration is shown in the map in Figure 1.
