REGULAR MEETING JULY 26, 2006 1' ~,~ <br />T11e Board of Public Safety met in the regular meeting at 9:15 a.m. on Wednesday, July <br />26, 2006, with President Jesusa Rodriguez and Board Members Juanita Dempsey, Donald <br />Alford, Bruce J. BonDurant and Patrick D. Cottrell present. Police Chief Thomas Fautz <br />was not present. Also present were Uniform Division Chief Darryl Boykins, Fire Chief <br />Luther Taylor and Board Attorney Thomas. Bodnar.. <br />The meeting was held in the board of Public Works Meeting Room, 13t° Floor, County <br />City Building, South Bend, Indiana. <br />APPROVE MINUTES OF PREVIOUS MEETINGS <br />President Rodriguez made a motion that the minutes of the Public Agenda Session, <br />Executive Session, and Regular meetings of the Board held on July 5, 2006 be approved, <br />if there were no objections by members of the Board. Mr. BonDurant seconded the <br />motion which carried. <br />POLICE DEPARTMENT <br />ACCEPT AND APPROVE RETIREMENT -CAPTAIN EDWARD I. FRIEND <br />In a letter to the Board, Chief Fautz submitted an Application and Declaration for <br />Retirement for Captain Edward I. Friend. He is retiring in good standing from the South <br />Bend Police Departme~:t:effective August 4, 2006, after serving the Department for forty- <br />three (43) years, nine (9} month and nineteen (19) days. The Board wished him well in <br />his endeavors. Mr. Friend stated it was a privilege to serve. Upon a motion made by Ms. <br />Dempsey, seconded by Mr. Cottrell and carried, the retirement was accepted and <br />approved. <br />ACCEPT AND APPROVE PROMOTION -CORPORAL RONALD NOWICKI <br />Chief Luther Taylor recommended that the above listed individual be promoted to the <br />rank of Sergeant in the Investigative Division, Major Crimes Unit, effective July 19, <br />2006. Upon a motion made by Ms. Dempsey, seconded by Mr. Cottrell and carried, the <br />promotion was accepted and approved. <br />ACCEPT AND FILE DONATIONS TO SOUTH BEND POLICE DEPARTMENT <br />Chief Fautz advised the Board of generous donations made to the South Bend Police <br />Department by TRANSPO. TRANSPO participated with the Senior Citizens Police <br />Academy, 2006 by donating the use of a TRANSPO Trolley and driver for the tour visit's <br />tra~TSportation during the academy. on June 13th, .2006.. TRANSPO also donated <br />recruitment posters, at their expense, and displayed posters in their fleet vehicles, <br />contributing to successful student enrollment. There being no further discussion, upon a <br />motion made by Ms. Dempsey, seconded by Mr. Cottrell and carried, the donations were <br />accepted and filed. Ms. Rodriguez noted that a motion was not necessary. <br />ACCEPT AND FILE DONATIONS TO SOUTH BEND POLICE DEPARTMENT <br />Chief Fautz advised the Board of generous donations made to the South Bend Police <br />Department by the family. of Jon Moses. Mr. Moses supplied gifts and dolls for children <br />who visit the Department or are victims of accident situations. Mrs. Amy Moses <br />provided transportation for their son Simon and his friends to contribute efforts and good <br />deeds towards dealing with children. There being no further discussion, the donations <br />~~-ere accepted and filed. <br />ACCEPT AND FILE DONATIONS TO SOUTH BEND POLICE DEPARTMENT <br />Chief Fautz advised the Board of generous donations made to the South Bend Police <br />Department by Simon`Moses to contribute his efforts and good deeds towards dealing <br />with children. Simon brought the dolls that his family donated to Headquarters when <br />Corporal Scott Severens died in the line of duty, using allowance money and hard earned <br />pay he received, toward the tribute. Then during the 4t" of July holiday, 2006, Simon and <br />his friends gathered financial resources to pay further tribute to other fallen officers. <br />Simon's benevolence is recognized and deeply appreciated. There being no further <br />discussion, the donations were accepted and filed. <br />
